Its known as a CRO "cathode ray oscilloscope"
its works by the emition of electrons from a hot source such as a tungsten wire and then shown on a screen as a dot, line or a figure and it can be controlled by by vertical and horizontal plates which provide a magnet to attract the emitted electrons to make different shapes.

The process by which electrons emitted is also known as thermo-emition as electrons are emitted by HEATING a resistant wire "tungsten"
