It is a well known fact that Japanese eat raw fish.
But the other day, the fish wasn't just raw, it was still alive!!!
While the flesh was neatly cut in slices of Sashimi, the head was still moving!!

    I live in Japan and have seen it happen.they keep the fish in display tanks so the customer can choose what fish they want,take it out,chop it up while its still alive and serve it still twitching.

    Whats so cruel about it? The fish has already been chopped up & its just reflex action?

    If u think it's cruel to kill & eat...how about your other meats like chicken, pork, beef or even eggs..u mean the chicken, pig, cow dont get killed? You eat eggs of unborn animals..isnt tat "worst" if you think tis is bad... Do u think that all the animals just decide to offer themselves to u on yr dinner plate for the love for u?? In that process we dont have to be "cruel" & kill any animals for food? Get a reality check man..or go b a monk n stop eating meat...duh!

    • What's the difference ?

      Whether you leave the head in place or throw it in the garbage after you chopped it off ? I believe the fish won't make much difference between finishing dying in your plate or in a garbage bag.
      For the customer this is a guaranty of the freshness of the meal on top of the presentation.
      I had sole sashimi served this way once, and alive (small) shrimps in some sauce for another occasion.
      It tasted great and I'd have it again though it's usually a bit too expensive.

  • I tried that once in South Korea...

    ... near the pollution-free East coastline. Live fish, shrimp, sea urchin, sea cucumber, octopus, squid... US$30/person, everything was alive. I got to admit they tasted great... better than anything I had ever eaten. But honestly, to me it's a once-in-a-lifetime thing and I'll never try it again.

    I live in Japan but I cant eat like that. Like big_civic says, some places you can choose the fish which is still swimming in the tank....crabs, lobsters too. No faces please.
