They do use nets to stop aircraft. But they are only deployed to catch them in a "known" emergency. This pilot was fine until he missed the wire with his arresting hook and his gear failed. The normal procedure is to accelerate and keep up airspeed ,then fly around for another pass. If the net was deployed it takes up the whole width of the flightdeck and they could not go around for another pass. Another reason they do not normally use the net is that it causes damage to the aircraft and takes far to long to reset. Hope that answers your question.
