Worst Landing Ever

Guys! This is a freaking model airplane, trust me!!! It is impossible for an aircraft that size to bounce up and down like that. The struts don't even absorb when the aircraft touches down, and it that where to have happened in real life trust me, the landing gear would have been damage, or worse the aircraft would have split in half. I'm a pilot my self, so I should know a thing or two.

Hi, I am not an expert. But I can say for sure this is the R/C remote control plane. The real plane can't be bouncing around like that. Or editing is possible.

...to raise and lower the nose? maybe they overcorrected a bounce, then overcorrected again as it hit the ground. I doubt it's actually carrying passengers, though, otherwise the airline office would be faced with 200 unhappy people and we would have heard about it on the news.

i am a pilot my self, but even i am unsure whether this is a model plane or the real aircraft, but i do know that if the aircraft landed with full load of passangers the impact of the landing would have caused some damage or severe damage to the landing gear. Its unclear which airline is this can someone tell...?

It's a Heinekan ad. Judging by the tire smoke, I'd say the plane is real. Probably a video of an aircraft with mechanical problems. The video clip just happens to look funny when viewed out of context. The so-called "complete" version is easy enough to find so no need to waste space posting it yet another time here. Sorry if I've spoiled the fun of arguing for nothing and about nothing.

I think it could be real: It could be a PAL 24fps video re-ripped to NTSC 30fps so the video may be a little fast.

The airbus uses an Electronic Flight Control System and my guess is he was landing down-wind and the Fly-by wire system took over when the Angle of attack got high enough to bang the tail. The pilot might have had the stick full back stick and the computer induced sensed an imminent tail strike.

If so, the EFCS may detect when the aircraft is within close proximity to the ground or on the ground and pitch the nose down to avoid damaging the tail. However, if the mains are on the ground at lower airspeed and a high rate pitch-up is initiated, the elevator and/or EFCS may not have enough authority to stop the pitch up, but if full up elevator is in place when the tail hits and the pilot lowers the stick or the tail stalls then a violent pitch down would likely result, as a result of the rapid pitch down the pilot instinctively yanks back on the stick and the process starts over again. Or at least that’s what it looks like to me.

I heard what happened to one of the early a320s, the computer thought the airplane was landing and ignored the pilot’s command for more pitch up in order to protect the tail from a strike. Instead it prevented the aircraft from climbing.

It is the second of a series of tests conducted by a french aviation company to test unmanned commercial airliners flown and landed by computer programs. The video of the first test is on the web aswell, in which the plane misses the runway alltogether and ploughs through the forest ahead, and eventually blowing up.

well i think its fake a plane of that size couldnot bounce like that without haveing any visible damage, and it kinda looks like the cokpit windows are stickers.

this is obviously a model of a p-47 thunderbolt. it was a bomber used in world war 1, and typically carried cruise missles. but this is only a model of one fools.

This is not entirely real. The approach appears real due to the way the aircraft flies, but for two reasons the landing bit is faked, at least partially, or sped up (but I doubt that as it would roll down the runway faster).
1. Moment of momentum, or angular momentum, there is no way on earth that that aircraft upon bouncing up like that would pivot so fast on its rear undercarriage and then so quickly the nose changes direction to travel faster not slower towards the ground. That is well and truly faster acceleration downwards than g would produce.
2. The undercarriage will not take an impact like that, especially not 3 of them. One wheel is designed to manage more than its share of the weight of the aircraft landing at about twice any noral speed. In that film the nose wheel strikes with a fair amount of weight behind it and at about 5 times a normal speed, which equates to 25 times the kinetic energy, assuming only a third of the weight it was designed for is behind the wheel it is already 4 times over it's design limit.

Here's the deal. At the time of this incident, I was in the area flying Boeing 767-300, Confidence is right, it was in Beijing, and we recieved a FMC message announcing the active runway was closed, after an inspection for iron left on the runway. The Airbus A319 was carrying a football team, and we were advised of a 342 at 39 MAG crosswind and poor visibility ranging around 5 miles, and the airport was then restricted to IFR only.

I can't believe so many people here this this is real footage.You dont have to be a physicist realise that its impossible for a passenger jet of that size to start bouncing up and down like that without being ripped to shreds. If it was possible for a jet to stay intact under those cirumstances (which it isnt) the people inside would have been mashed to a pulp. Its more than obvious that this is computer animated. Even a model plane coudln't do that.

I have the full video, just watched it again and it is a beer commercial for a Dutch beer. The pilot makes an announcement from the Dutch crew to the football team that is on the plane and due to play Holland apologising for the rough landing. Hope this helps

I have been flying big jets for 20 years now. (707s, 747s, DC-9s), and I don't think this is real. Real jets would have lifted off again when the nose gear pops that high off the ground, because approach speeds are higher than take-off speeds. In addition, the aircraft in the video is an A-320, which is computer controlled. It is literally incapable of doing what is shown.

Ever see videos of planes coming in to hard and fast and that landing gear just disintegrate? Scooting along on the belly of the plane, sparks and everything? Yeah, no commercial plane has landing gear that could make a GIANT ASS plane bounce like that. It's a model, or someone spent a long time editing this.

that was a normal landing and them was "touched" by a good video editing software. Who did that had not forgot to add audio effects to the video.

Hey guys, you've been had by some smart video work.
The clever video guys sped the clip up to 200 or 300%, which is why it looks like a model. (I tried downloading it to render it slower, but the clip is protected). If you use the scrub bar and left/right arrow key to step through the clip, you'll see that the front gear does compress, then lengthen as the nose goes up again. During the several bounces it does this, and at slower speed, show the correct ballistics. Note also that when the nosewheel finally stays on the ground the fuselage still bounces progressively less a few times as it's rolling out.
I couldn't find any indication of headwind speed, but it's pretty clear (to me) that the pilot had lots of it, therefore his ground speed was slower than usual. This would account for the huge bounce over such a short distance. Again, by speeding up the video, it looks deliciously unrealistic. With lots of lift coming from the headwind, the plane is floating much more than it appears, and impact on the nose gear is not as great as it appears. Most of the impact is vertical, and there's not much horizontal force on the gear, so it's not in much danger of getting ripped off.
As for audio, they cleverly added that normal-sounding voice at the end just to put you off. In fact, the landing sounds are in sync and could easily be 2 or 3 times speed without sounding too strange. To my ear, they sound higher pitched than reality.

It is a plane bringing the German soccer crew to the Netherlands for the championships of 2000. The captain of the Dutch carrier (not an existing airline for obvious reasons) addresses the passengers after the landing, wishing the German team a warm welcome and "prosperous" championship. ;-)

come on guys...this is obviously a model plane....the front landing gear would have absorbed the initial touchdown and not bounced, perfect example, watch an aircraft carrier and how the landing gear on a f14 or f18 absorbs the landing...if this were a real plane it would have crashed and more than likely snapped the front gear....listen to sound again....its not aligned with video

Pilot, if it's a model plane only, that was pretty good sound effects and visual effects.
Now, for the truth, this indeed can happen and can be real, if there was enough air pressure/wind it could even keep the aircraft afloat if it lost power. It seems the air pressure was resisting the landing but when the plane finally touched down it was gone.

ever heard of weather? ever heard of severe wind speed? thats what caused such a bad landing! its never the pilots fault, millions of dollars are spent on every pilot in training to ensure that a pilot will never do any mistakes.

Wow the more comments I read on Metacafe the less confidence I have in the younger generations. I am completely in disgust with anyone who could even contemplate claiming that this is a model aircraft. If you really believe this please have your self fixed !! because you might actually help raise the intelligence level of the American gene pool

I am in my mid 40’s and have been building and flying model aircraft since I was 7 years old.
I have built and flown everything from single engine high wings to multi engine multi rotor turbine powered helicopters. At one time I was even a sponsored pilot for a well known model helicopter manufacturer.

You have got to be half blind to believe that the aircraft in the video is a model.
I could easily fill 5 pages of text with observations indicating conclusively that the aircraft in the video is not a model. But for now I will keep it simple.

One word >>>>MASS<<<< its very obvious that the aircraft in this video has much more mass then a small balsa aircraft, If there was enough energy to bend the nose gear, A balsa wood or fiberglass aircraft would have also bounced on the main gear. In 37 or so years of flying models, I have never seen a model aircraft of any size produce smoke from the main gear on touch down. While this could have been added. The physical dynamics of a 20 or 30 pound Model could never simulate an aircraft of the size and weight of the commercial craft in the Video .

I guess the problem we have here is that most of the people who believe it is a model grew up in the video game generation, and therefore have a difficult time differentiating reality from fantasy. While people in my generation spent thousands of hours building and flying models and watching the real ones at the airport while dreaming of one day flying them !

I don't understand why ,whoever was making the landing ,slammed that nose gear down so hard, even in very windy conditions..And the truth is, if it's really that bad,don't go beyond the prescribed limits published in the airplane manual. Maybe the captain had declared an emergency, then anything goes..until you report to the Chief Pilot and the FAA.
