Althought this would have been very unsettling for the soldiers the missile most likely would not have armed ans there were insufficient launch forces to disengage the built in safety features. Therefore the only dammage done was to their underwear...

I wonder what the hell the instructor were thinking. To fire the eryx, you need AT LEAST 1m clearance (approx 3feet) from the missile to he ground.(if I remember correctly) The missile will not be armed until flytime is X meter (don`t remember). So no one should be harmed in the seqense. Murphy`s law rules.

The arm distance for a missile that size I would imagine would around 40-50 meters, so they're quite safe. This happened to my friend also in the Finnish Military, only he had a smaller, handheld model.

- Could have been a hangfire.
It's not just the missile going "BOOM" that they had to worry about. If the rocket motor was a "hangfire" it oould have lit off late, on the ground, and the round could have flown in any direction (not to mention spraying them all with fire).

Canadians don't use the Eryx, they use the Javelin missile that they get from the US.

No, you do not HAVE to have a certain ground clearance, but it is a recomendation in place. A DUD like the one that was fired will remain inactive due to the lack of explosive launch force (the activiation trigger, then followed by a time delay to ensure sufficient distance from firing base) In brief, the missile in the video would not have exploded, unless there was a fault with the missile firing mechanism, AND the triggering, AND the safety, AND the CO. So NAH, it won't explode.
