  • What an idiot...

polar ice caps floating in the ocean and melting is not whats gonna make the worlds water level rise...its when land based glaciers melt into the ocean ...thats whats gonna cause all the trouble ....so for your next test try stacking enough ice cubes into the glass so that two or three cubes are suspended above the water line then see what happens oh ya ur an idiot

    • Actually

Florida has some of the cleanest water in the nation because the water supply is filtered thru a natural aquafier system. Your water was probably dirty because you don't clean your glass after using them you pig.

samowen is right...polar ice caps that are in the ocean will not raise water lever because they're weight is already displaced in the water...when it melts it's just going to fill that weight gap with water...glaciers haven't been displaced in our ocean water so when those melt the sea level rises. think of placing just ice cube in one glass.. and water in another...when the ice cubes melt and u add the melted water to the other glass...it's gonna raise the water level.

By Meak13 1172620017 Reply Spam [+5] Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • You are right in one way Wrong in other....

Right === Level will rise due to LAND ICE
Wrong === Fill that weight gap with water

Actually after filling the gap with MELTED SEA ICE, the level will decrease. Remember we are most concerned about VOLUME here. If the weight of the displaced volume of water is more than the weight of the body (here ice) the body will float, the same way as ice is floating. So, as the weight of ice is lesser than the displaced water, after melting it will fill lesser volume. But, when the LAND ICE melts, i am sure it is going to create hell of havoc. :-(

By Anu_The_Guy 1176681731 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • I Agree

I agree, ice caps in the oceans melting will actually decrease sea levels because ice is less dense than water (ice=0.92g/mL, water=1g/ml and salt water is even denser). But when land based glaciers melt the sea level will rise, and for most glaciers 10% of the mass is above water, so take that into consideration and water levels are going to rise even with the ocean based glaciers.

By rohitss 1173720938 Reply Spam [+4] Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • close

but even melted, ice that was floating will not raise the water level. it displaces its mass, not its volume. but good thinking anyway.

The antarctic is not floating, rather it is sitting on the continent. Although there is is wide rang of estimates, models are predicitng a 50-->85 meter (~150-->250 ft. for all ya yanks) rise in the oceans if the entire antarctic melted

    • logic here anywhere

apply that same idea about overstacking the ice to the oceans and the frozen glaciers, and you would be talking about there being 2-3 times more water on the planet in the form of ice than in the oceans.
it's a good argument if you are talking about flooding a cup, but int the scale of the planet... that would likely cause the sea level to rise up to the mountaintops

    • Your 100% right

Your 100% right on this one, one thing this guy doesnt know is that, 3/4 is under water( i dunno exact amount, no one does), so only 10% is seen above the surface, so fill your glass up, so that the ice cubes form a mountain like structure above the rim of the glass, then watch it melt and make a mess, same thing that will happen if it does happen, create a big mess

in real icebergs float on the water while most of their volume is in the air , and not like these ice cubes in ur cup , when icebergs milt their volume will make the water level higher

    • give the guy a break

he just didnt take into account that the polar ice caps float ABOVE sea level. land based glacier melting will have a minimal impact. its the melting of the enormous landmasses made of ice melting that we should worry about like the arctic, greenland, and anarctica.

By carolinapanthers10 1173185210 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • yeah you're right but

the whole thing starts when you put the ice caps in the water:
at the beggining of the vid the water was low
and then when he put the ice caps the water rised and didn´t change.why?
because of the MASS that's the whole problem...

By wtfadh 1173044583 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • Whats the percentage of...

Land based glaciers in comparison to the ones in the water? Because there would have to be an ass load to really affect us.

    • I agree... :P

The sea level is where the water was B4 the ice was put in. The WATER level raised when u put the ice in.
Also, the water level didnt change because when water is frozen it expands. that means that the size of the melted water was smaller...so it went down.

      / /( . Y .) ;P

the water level doesn't rise from ice that is swimming in the water, but from land ice plus and, most importantly, from the fact that if the temperature of the water increases, it's volume will increase significantly!

  • nice try

Nice try, but not all the ice is free floating as in your example. Now do it again with the ice in the glass and some ice suspended above the water line (as in reality) and you will see a increase.

Melting Icebergs == Not a threat (as your example shows)
Melting Ice off Land == Problem

  • You know....

.... I find this topic interesting. But wading through these posts is like being in a room of people, some with valid points on either side and others spouting off nonsense like a homeless guy on crack.

I'll keep my point simple. Humans, and the greenhouse effect, may not be the sole cause of the problem. But given the environmental havoc we are creating on the planet, it doesn't seem like to far of a leap to say we are having an impact on the warming issue. It's like a house. Most people probably keep them reasonably clean and it requires an effort. A similar effort should be made with the planet.

Now, you guys keep on keeping on.

Just cause he's not vice president or president anymore he should lay down and retire quietly to some corner of the US? If you believe in something and got something to say... say it. If the press puts you in the limelight your doing something right and getting your point heard. Your a moron.

    • No, not really.

The press puts you in the limelight if what you're saying gets them more ratings. The more controversial the better, usually.

As for Al Gore? If he really believed that humans are the cause of global warming, then he would have hiked his happy ass across the country instead of flying around in an carbon-dioxide spewing, ozone-killing jet.

Nice way to make up a lie to prove your point
using dry ice in water leave no change in volume, now take regular ice and let it melt in a glass of water 3/4 full and it WILL over flow. go right a head and try it.

You can see that it is DRY ICE, because of the crap that it leaves in the water, normal ice does not do that....

I really hate people that have to fake stuff to try to prove their points....

So.....your myth of busting global wwarming...has been BUSTED!

By BaldGuyShow 1193531978 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
  • Keep It Cool

It's proportions, dudes. Let's assume the temperature rises so that the 'landmass ice' melted. Proportionately, the temperature would also have to be warmer enough to cause more water to evaporate and be kept in vapor form. So again, it balances out and would not cause the sea levels to rise.

Not unless the 'water cycle' we learned in grade school suddenly developed a sentient mind of its own and became selective over how it affects the water--being warm enough to melt additional water but not also being proportionately warm enough to keep more water in vapor form.

Maybe in Dimension 13, but not here.

  • Intersting Fact

The origins of "global warming" alarmism had its roots in the 1970s-era fears of "global cooling" and an impending ice age, resulting from the 1940-1970 global temperature decline. Swedish meteorologist Bert Bolin suggested at the time that man-made greenhouse gas emissions might offset the cooling by warming the atmosphere.

Arquimedes principle: when some volume is introduced inside a liquid, the volume of the liquid will raise. In your case: you're marking the sea level with the ice inside. try and put the ice outside de glass and, when melting, the volume of the water in the glass will raise as much as if you had put th ices inside. Glaciers, ice over Antartida, and a big part of Atartica (I mean, the part over the sea level, not the one uder it) are what, when melting, will cause sea level rasing
