Hack A Flashlight To Power Your...!

Kipkay strikes again!

My mom gave me a flashlight that worked just like that for christmas this year, it even came with tips for several different models of phone. I guess mcgyver (aka kipkay) didn't realize thath he could just buy one. (P.S. it takes over 30 minutes of cranking to even try extending the usable life of my motorola razr).

can i do the same to start my engine if the battery went out?

check this out someone already though of this and brought it to the market i bet this guy got the idea from this flashlight (cannot link anything) search youtube for zipping flashlight

fun if you want to build it yourself, but things like these are for sale already.

not to mention that cranking it for hours would take more energy in food then the electricity would cost...

A solution. Next time my phone dies ill whip out the soldering iron. If you have a car adaptor handy then it's likely to be in a car i.e. source of power. If you want to make it beforehand, you could make a device that uses AA batteries or just have a spare battery for your phone. You can also buy these taylor-made for the job. Seems like a gimmic to me unless you are in a country where power sources are very few and fare between. Nice handy work though!

this is good for an emergency situation if you happen to stuck somewhere with this crank-for or shake-for light thingy. it is not just fun hacking or making it, neither the issue of where you can buy similar-things in store. I'm saying this because it could save your butt someday, any day! for this, i give this man a credit.

Meh. Even if other people aren't, I'm impressed. One (probably stupid) question though... don't most devices expect a somewhat regulated voltage for charging? Can you really use less than they're expecting?

For all those people saying to buy one of these at the store, go ahead. Do it, that way you may never actually see the importance of tinkering with free energy. You might not also learn that all (most) electric motors can be used in reverse for power generation. HMMMN. How about a kids toy car that they sit in and push around, and when they get enough of a charge in their batteries, can be used as a kind of turbo or accessory power, or whatever. Also working on my hybrid scooter, in theory should be able to ride on gas during the day and electric at night off the juice from the gas motoring all day. hey kip great hack but there is a ten dollar flashlight at my local wal-mart in the sporting goods that has a crank and a plug in for your cell phone adapter it is much easier then being stuck in the woods with a portable soldering iron and a crank light and a car charger for your phone

This isn't the greatest of ideas, probably boarding on stupid. The generator in those hand-cranked flashlights is unregulated and can and will damage the charge circuit of your cell phone. Emergency chargers on the market that are regulated and will not destroy your cell phone. If you want one don't waste your time with this.

This is OK if you are camping or only have a mobile phone to worry about, but why not wire up a 12v female (socket) to the wind-up torch. Then you could plug in any device that can charge from a car 12v socket using that device's 12v connector cable (then you don't have to worry about polarity etc)and not have the torch just charge a mobile phone.

I got one to keep in the glove box after watching this vid. Was wondering if you somehow put enough of them together or modified the crank system somehow if you could make one suitable for charging a car battery. I don't know link ten of them and attach the crank to a pedal system or something lol. I don't know... I know little about electronics, but either way that is pretty kewl. If you figure out a way to crank a car battery alive in the future drop me a line :).
