you can add the iodide to the water and then add these drops upon aluminum. The waiting time will be shorter then since you don't have to wait around for the iodide to mix with the water first.
Also if any of you ppl out there are considering doing this you should do it outside, and not near a wall or anything you don't want to get "destroyed". The purple gas that comes up is iodide gass which leaves big yellow stains on things it comes in contact with!
