  • The long diagonal isn't a diagonal at al...

The total area of the figures is 32, not 32.5 (half of the rectangle). It is an illusion, furthered by your claim of making one large triangle - which neither arrangement makes. The hypotenuse of the green triangle is not colinear with the hypotenuse of the red triangle. Close enough to fool the eye, but not the same. Consider the hypotenuse of each to be a line and take the slope. 3/8 (0.375) is not equal to 2/5 (0.400). Cute puzzle. I liked it.

Add up the areas of the 4 figures.
    What do they equal to?
What SHOULD they be equal to?

  • volume/angle of triangles

They look the same, but the actual angle of the triangles is different, and thus when you move them, the total area is not proporionate, and thus more room is left available. If you took the true triangle that split the diagram in half, you would not be able to cut it at 8 blocks from the left and get it to align with the top corner of a block. It would have a slightly different shape.
