If your machine has 512MB or more of RAM, you can boost its
performance by setting it up to keep the core system in RAM
and deal less with (slower) hard disk.Watch the video for
instructions.
512mb is too little to enable this setting. It would hog too much memory for Windows and give too little for programs. Recommend this setting only when you have more than 512mb. If you have 3 gig and up, recommending disabling the paging file too.

you play games or run programs that consume lots of memory, turning off virtual memory will be a disaster!
By EPPE 1174743436This tweak is awesome! if you do nothing but browse the net on your machine...
For those of use who actually USE the machine for anything useful this destroys performance.
You can do the same this via going the following route.
My Computer --> Click Properties
Choose the Advance Tab --> Performance Settings
On Performance Options --> Choose the Advance tab
In the group Virtual Memory choose the change button.
Choose No Paging file. And click on the Set Button.
This will definetly help for users who have at least 1, but rather 2 or more GB of memory. Beside, some programs cannot run without a page file present.
It's better to change the size of the page file to a smaller one, or to a fix size.
i already have 1 so for me is more useful this guy comment : No Registry Edit, Just set the Option.

10q man !
That has NOTHING to do with the registry setting "disable paging executive". Disabling the Paging File is idiotic. Virtual Memory is always in use and it is NOT the paging file. Disabling the Paging File will REDUCE performance. Not to mention it will still be used check the task manager = performance tab. Anyone who says otherwise has not idea how the Windows Memory System works:
"Virtual Memory is always in use, even when the memory required by all running processes does not exceed the amount of RAM installed on the system"
NEVER DISABLE THE PAGING FILE!!!
http://mywebpages.comcast.net/SupportCD/XPMyths.html#Optimization
"virtual memory" refers to the virtual space that is allocated on startup (of the operating system). This may be a combination of physical memory and a paging file. True it is always used, but when there is no paging file, the virtual memory is only physical memory.
I never use a paging file. Ram is very cheap right now and it is impossible for me to fill up 4GB, ever. Paging files were created when the price difference between ram and hard disk was gigantic.
Think about it this way, when you load a program, it reads it to the hard disc, moves it to virtual memory, and is read from virtual memory. If you are using paging files, you are simultaneously reading a program from your hard drive, coping data to another part of the hard drive, and once again reading it from that hard drive. That is three times you have to read off a slow disc. Using no paging, the file is read off the hard drive, stored on physical memory and read off physical memory. Only one read from a slow disk has occurred. The operation without a paging file is three times quicker.
The myth about windows only using paging when necessary is false. Windows uses the paging file as if it was physical memory. Take a look at the performance tab and see for yourself that about half of your applications are running on the paging file. No wonder why that program was taking so long to load...
There is only one flaw to using no paging file, that is with error recovery. When windows crashes, it needs to store the data about the crash somewhere so it knows what happened to send to microsoft for information. This is somewhat important, so I recommend using a paging file of 200MB (the minimum required for error recovery). This way the virtual memory will not be used for your applications, rather only in error recovery.
Some people like it the hard way. This isn't the first "tweak secret" revealed in here. Some of the others are (unintentionally) funny actually...
