Gound bees
Same thing happened to my wife. She was pulling weeds in the front flower garden and pulled the "lambs ear" plant that was partially covering the "hole" they lived in. They came swarming out and she was running around screaming. She only got stung 5 times but it scared her pretty good.

Be careful of small holes in the ground...actually be careful of the big ones too. Depending on where you live there might be other nasty critters in them. heh. Peace.
