One of America’s renowned conceptual artists, Bruce Nauman routinely explores the ambiguity of knowledge, language, and behavior through his creative manipulation of words and phrases. His brilliant and expressive 1983 work on paper Human Nature remains true to this form through its imaginative interrelation of “human,” “animal,” and “nature” by texture, shape, and composition. Through the work’s distorted positioning of “human” and “animal” on the left side, the artist appears to suggest their convergence with “nature” on several levels. The sheer size, energy, and subjectivity of Human Nature rank it among Nauman’s most interesting and important word-images.
