In his book, The Wisdom of Crowds, James Surowiecki suggests that the outcome of aggregation of information in groups is often superior than could have been made by any single member of the group. Does Wisdom of Crowds apply to art? In other words, can the quality and accuracy of a joint effort painting surpass the brilliant work of artists such as Michelangelo, Goya, or Turner?
The Wikipic Project, which took place in Kinnernet camp 2007, was a first attempt to assess the question. 200 world wide participants made a group effort to paint "Jesus Walking on Water". Each member painted a tiny part of the portrait.
The results look closer to GroupThink than to the Wisdom of Crowds, however, it is still a beautiful piece of art.
