I've heard about "Special Sensors" in ambulances and busses so it sounds plausible. I bet The Mythbusters wouldn't dare to debunk this one even if its not true. It would change the whole traffic system wouldn't it?

I am a firefighter and I can tell you it aint gonna happen. The device on top of traffic lights is called an Opticom. Only emergency vehicles with an installed Opticom strobe on them will trigger the lights to change. Not all emergency vehicles have an Opticom system installed, as well as some lights. Remotes and flashing your headlights will not do anything!

Think about this kids. You are suggesting that a sensor designed to 'see' visible stroboscopic light is going to be affeted by a VERY short range infra red device? NOT! It is the stroboscopic frequency which controls the light.
Oh, and the 'you might have to try a few different combinations'. Are you good at math? Count the buttons on the remote you show, do the math and report back on how many thousand combinations there are.

how can you change the traffic light from that far away when your remote range isn't even more than 20-30 feet? just use your remote step like 20 feet back from the tv and try and turn it on, it wont work, the distance from your car to that traffic light is way more than that

I don't think this stops the other traffic. It looks like the two cars that rolled through weren't trying to beat the light. I don't think this triggers that other lights to turn red. I think that if this works you could get in a really bad accident trying to cross a street that doesn't appear to have a red light.

I still want to try it to say the least just to see if it works.

First of all, the company that made this remote decides the behavior of the remote for each code. If you have observed, the codes are not the same for the same company TV for different universal remotes. So inorder for the 911 code to work, the company that produced this universal remote should create the circuit such that it sends the proper signal for the traffic lights to react, which I dont think is possible. which remote company wants to mess with govt frequencies ?? .. So its upto u guys to make a judgement . May be I am wrong .. who knows?

that sensor on the stoplight is a receiver that an emergency responding unit controls. It's called opticom and it's not from the red strobes on a emergency response vehicle otherwise everyone would do it. It is from a flashing strobe light in a certain frequency activating it. Go to your local fire station and they can explain it better.

The device is for emergency vehiles. Using the device to changing the stop lights suddenly might cause other vehicles to crash at intersections. It might kill innocent people, or even the owner of the device.

This is a toy and please don't play with it. I am not surprised when someone who gets hurt/killed by the toy in this "instructional" video they or their families will sue the instructor and Metacafe.

I live in NC and a person here was caught using it. The traffic sensors monitor when lights are changed using this technology. The Dept. of Transportation noticed that the same lights were being changed the same time every morning. They looked at the cameras monitoring the intersections and found the same vehicle was present every time. Nailed the guy!

If you pull up to a red light and traffic is going past and the light mysteriously turns green for you, I think the cop will notice this just as much as if you run a red light. You have the same chance being caught screwing with the system (which I believe is a much worse offense) as you do being caught running a red light. The sensors are also built into the middle of the red lights.They sense flashing.Just flash your brights on/off fast....if it has sensor,it will change immediatly.

Every day I drive to work I pass 5 stoplight with sensors. Everyday I falsh my brights as fast as I can at the red lights, and I have only had to fully stop twice in the last 2 years. Flashing lights DO work.

cop pulled me over and said " you're not allowed to watch that channel, we have a parental lock on it" Now i'm gett'n charges from the cable co. saying that i have unauthorized use of "the traffic channel"

IR signals are true, a friend of mine built one to trip the lights, he did it at two lights and by the third there were two cops waiting for him. Turns out this is highly ILLEGAL as well as hard to get away with. When the sensor is tripped, the lights progamming or schedule gets offed.. the traffic control center for that area is notified that an emergency vehicle is in the area, All officers must report when going code 3 (lights and sirens) and these control centers monitor that traffic. so when the traffic center knows a lights been tripped but no one is in route, they send people for you... not that the remote works anyways...

Its a felony to do that... need to do some research on that but I almost remember seeing a similar hack somewhere...

I've never seen a light turn green for an emergency vehicle. The usually get stuck behind someone who doesn't want to move out of there way because the light is red.

Well, I believe it could work...I tested it with my radar detector and it set it off with a "Laser/strobe" alert. For my remote it was the TV/VCR button, and it didn't work every time

just so you know... this is wrong! my friend works for a company called Econolite. they work on traffic signals in california. they do video detection which is newer but for the most part they still use loops in the ground. installed by a company called republic. at least thats one company. so this remote will not work on this S**t .

here in england, we don't have that sensor, we have underground pressure pads and our emergency vehicles are allowed to run red lights

That if you try and change one light with the remote, whats stopping it from changing all the other lights near you, if all the lights have the same frequency its like your TV and your VCR and your lights are all programmed to the same thing, so when you wanna turn on your TV your lights and VCR change at the same time...just a thought, but the thing looks like it would just confuse everyone and make traffic slower haha

If you take your remote with you while you drive and press any button at any stop light you will most likely not change any light but mabey 1 out of every 10 you will press the button right as it changes. So if you record that your a genius.
