DETROIT, M.I. -- Detroit trucks have rallied forth to the final round of competition in the MI Auto Times May the Best Truck Win series of comparisons, and the championship title can only go to one of the many tough Detroit trucks that were featured in the contest.
In the final round**, the Dodge Ram 1500 SLT and the GMC Sierra 1500 SLE were the two finalists competing for the win. Both Detroit trucks featured many of the same features but in the end, one clear winner emerged.
There can only be one MI Auto Times Best Truck and this year, the GMC Sierra 1500 SLE takes the glory.
Both trucks were rated in four categories, with each category having four stars as the top rating. The categories judged were factory warranty, comfort, value, and of course, power. In all but one category, the GMC Sierra received a perfect score, which proves the strength of this rugged truck extends into all aspects making it a solid buy.
Warranty for the GMC Sierra is a 100,000 mile/5-year transferable Powertrain Limited Warranty. The Dodge Ram does have a 5-year/100,000 mile Powertrain warranty, but where the two diverge is when it comes to additional warranties. The GMC Sierra offers not only roadside assistance but courtesy pickup, too, and it has an additional year of protection against corrosion. These factors earned the GMC Sierra four stars, and the Dodge Ram three and a half stars.
Comfort should never be neglected or substituted for power when choosing a truck. One should come with the other, and in this case, the GMC Sierra has more power and more comfort than the Dodge Ram.
With three and a half stars, it beat the Dodge Ram by a quarter of a star because if the On-Star system. The On-Star system offers drivers more benefits and security with programs such as automatic crash response, stolen vehicle recovery and emergency services. The GMC Sierra also has more head room, more leg room and more standard and available features.
Power went to the GMC Sierra with a total of four stars. With a slightly larger engine size of 4.8 liters, the GMC Sierra offers more displacement. GMC Sierra drivers will also receive more payload capacity by 161 pounds, and more towing capacity by 550 pounds.
For value, even though the Dodge Ram had a lower MSRP, the national incentives being offered at the time of comparison put the GMC Sierra at four stars and $2,410 cheaper than the Dodge Ram.
