  • In their defense

In their defense bump keys were meant for those big office buildings so the janitors wouldn't have to carry around a hundred keys that could be easily stolen.

  • Medeco and Schalge

I saw another report that said that Medeco and Schlage locks can't be bumped. I think Kwikset has some that protect against that too.

    • Medeco and Schlage

Medeco locks are high seurity locks. Very expensive and are made with whats called mushroom or spool pins. They catch to where its makes it extremely difficult to pick and even bump. Schlage locks can be bumped although they probably make newer bump proof locks. BTW one of the locks in that video that they bumped was a schlage. Im a locksmith and I work with these all the time.

  • Who's the benefit for showing this?

Looks like if the ones who manufacture the modern kind of locks would pay this information to be shown, and the old locks becomes useless, so they will increase their sales. To show this is not stupid, it's evil and corrupt.

    • The benefit for showing this

You could chose to remain ignorant of this but your locks on your house are still going to be able to be bumped. Yeah, by showing this on television the bad guys are going to definitely see this. But at the same time, a lot of them have already known about this. Its a matter of how much you care about security. interesting to me that one person will purchase a $300,000 house and yet put cheap $8 locks on it! It works to increase sales of new locks but at the same time make it a lot harder than 5 seconds of bumping to get in your house. Being in the business of physical security being a locksmith, its your own choice as to how much value you put on the security of your own home.

  • Patent filed in 1928 for a bump key

This webpage has links to a 1928 patent showing what is definitely a bump key:

Guess these have been around for a while, leave it to the internet to spread the word.

By Broken Head 1175164898 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • Hmmm!

According to this you should also be scared to stay in your house.

    • Scared to leave your house?

Well you should lock your house while your in it too. I have heard of instances where a guy robbed about 30 houses before they caught him. He would walk in while they were home and grab S**t and go. A lot of people do not think anyone would come in their house while they are home. Hope you sleep good tonite ;-)

...but the internet made them far more accessible" - now that's relevant.

  • Learn

I understand where you are coming from, being concerned that people will learn how to do this by watching... However the problem is that criminals already know how to do this stuff. But now you know how insecure your locks are. Use it to your own atvantage.

  • what a great way to

invent some new expensive lock to now be required to keep you safe.

I think the one's giving the information are the same people who are making a profit if you buy the more secure locks.

Just get a good vicious doggy.
