While clearly effective (and I fully sympathize with the homeowners here) such "booby traps" are illegal in most states and jurisdictions. In addition, such acts may leave the homeowner criminally and civilly liable for the harm rendered on the burglar. Nothing worse than getting sued by the criminal for injury and damages. Best to cough up for monitored alarm service and a passive security system (cameras, etc). Expensive yes, but much less so than a lawsuit or jail time and fines.
