99% of the people know salt either lowers freezing point or raises boiling point. It's been done in Mythbusters. Hell, it's even done in Chemistry 11 when kids learn to make their own ice cream. Just because of your reputation has this video earned you this money, I hope you're happy.

why don't u just take the cat out of the fridge and fill up that gap?

It's older than my grandma.......They teach you that when you study gastronomy, don't know in America though, but in real gastronomy schools around the world that's the way to chill champagne very fast.
In USA the "knowledge" of gastronomy is almost zero, so I don't know...

this is how you make ice cream exept you use rock salt

take a polythine bag, and put some baking power and lime juice. mix it well. finaly put a beer can in it and put it in the freezer. in less than 2 mins it will be ice cold. note: when u take the can out of the plastic bag. wash is well before opening the beer can.

Well, if you've ever been to a party then should probably already know this. I don't blame him for trying to tell people about this but he definitely shouldn't get a producer reward.

Will definetely use this advice next summer :) There is also a way how to chill a bottle of water if you're driving a car and don't have anything cold around. Pour some water on a rag (i know drivers always have rags to wipe windows/mirrors etc) wrap it around the bottle and hold it out the window while driving. Evaporating water will cool the bottle, although it works better at a high speed. Be careful however, driving one-handed is dangerous and requires extra concentration, and watch the cars that are passing by so you hand don't get ripped by one!!

Asking your friend you'll give him $5.00 if he roll his hand all over the salt and put it in ice water for 10 seconds. Tell him that this is to prove your point that it'll "raise" the freezing point of water making it less cold than it is. Once he sticks his hand in there start counting... 1... 2... 3... 4... OMFG IT'S COLD!!1 laugh as he takes it out and tells him guess you got it mixed around.

you could lose the salt, AND lose the bowl. just pour your coke over the ice cubes.and be drinking your 'super chilled' beverage in 10 seconds.....SUPER LAME...

The salt doesn't make the water any colder. It lowers the termperature that the water will freeze at. But you won't get below 32 degrees anyway, because you have water and ice in a bowl at room temperature.

So effectively, your demo is to cool drinks rapidly by swirling them in a bowl of ice water.

Wont the sodas get all foamy and overflow after stirring them .The drink's now cold but I have to use it without the fizz.

My problem with this is that it seems to only chill the drink a little and make the aluminum really cold. Am I doing it wrong or is that the way it works?

If you don't got ice, there's another way to do that.
Use a large bowl (over 6 liters) fill it with cold water. Now add 500grams of Salt, and mix it.
The salt will cool the water down near 0°c and that cools your stuff easy too :)

In Chemistry class, I made ice cream using that. Add milk, vanilla, and sugar into a ziploc bag and massage the bag in the ice-salt-water mixture until it has the consistency of ice cream. Viola and it's ready to be served.

Antifreeze in your car works the same way. When you add a solute to water you lower the freezing point and raise the boiling point. In the case of a car its ethylene glycol, in this case its salt. However, adding salt to icewater will not make the coke cool faster. It will not "superchill" the coke. Give me a break, please. The same result could be obtained by placing a can in a bucket of icewater without salt.

what i do is just get some ice (no water) put it in a bowl then roll the coke in the ice for 2 minutes and it works well

If you have ice already, why go through all this when you can just pure the coke on a glass with ice.

but if you have ice, just put ice in the glass, then pour your coke in it, itwill do the same trick. no?

To All, Did you notice cans used were 8oz aluminum. Wonder how long to cool if were 12oz, 16oz, 20 oz, and 24 oz etc cans. Would time be shorter or longer if 8, 12, 16, 20, 24 oz etc plastic bottles were used.

If you have the ice, why would you waste time going thru all the motion doing that instead of pouring ur coke in a glass and just add ice....

im a student at cooper union where the Cooper Cooler uses icewater spinning mechanism to fast chill. a can of soda 2 icecubes to chill water bath = 55 sec chill time

Anyways, this is a good way to get frostbite too, just put a pile of salt on your skin and then place an ice cube on top of it, wait 5 minutes and then amputate! (seriously, don't do this)

this is the lowest temperature Mr Farenheit could reach in his lab using this method so that's why it's O°F (-18°C)

then y does it make the temperature lower? surely the temperature stays the same but the salt makes the water freeze at a lower temperature? if that was the case then the can of coke is only getting colder because you put it in a bowl of ice and water, and the salt makes no difference to the coke

I can just throw it in the dam freezer for like 5 minutes and then save money on NOT buying salt and ice.

1. Room temperature soda is only 80 degrees out of the can - if the room you are in is 80 degrees! How can you make a generalized statemement that room temp soda is "almost 80 degrees right out of the can"? In the winter in my basement room temperature soda is more like 65 degrees right out of the can! Duh!

2. This "chilling method" is ancient. I mean, that is how you make home-churned ice cream (ice and coarse salt around the churn), etc.

I still can't figure out how people make money off the obvious. Guess there are a lot of dumb people out there watching Metacafe! :)

you can drop a ice in your drink in 1 second! you dont have to go to so much effort just put it in the freezer for 2 min!

take the temp of that water.. it's onlyl 32deg. F. gaurateed.. salt doesn't super chill anything and it is impossible for ice and water to be less than 32 deg f.!!! good effort though ..

as u can see, he is only using the little half-sized cokes in his demonstration - not the full sized. does this make any difference? i don't know........ do the full sized coke cans just not fit into the bowl or what? why didn't he use the full sized coke cans? i'm just a tad bit suspicious about this one.....

Whenever I add ice to room-temperature soda, it just makes it flat. Zero carbonation and it tastes terrible even though it's cold.

You can also place the opened coke can in a bell jar connected to a vacuum pump (The one found in science lab) And pump out the air until that coke boils (in a cold way).

You don't need the salt, because the water is not going to get colder than 32 degrees anyway. Ice melts to water at 32 degrees, and the salt doesn't make the water any colder than that. The cans of pop will chill just as fast in icy cold water as icy cold SALTY water.

The maker of this video needs to go back to school. If you have a bowl of water and ice, the water will never even approach the regular freezing point (32 F), so it doesn't matter whether you put salt in or not. All the salt does is lower the freezing point. So, no need for the salt, you'll get the same effect with water and ice.
