take a polythine bag, and put some baking power and lime juice. mix it well. finaly put a beer can in it and put it in the freezer. in less than 2 mins it will be ice cold. note: when u take the can out of the plastic bag. wash is well before opening the beer can.

Will definetely use this advice next summer :) There is also a way how to chill a bottle of water if you're driving a car and don't have anything cold around. Pour some water on a rag (i know drivers always have rags to wipe windows/mirrors etc) wrap it around the bottle and hold it out the window while driving. Evaporating water will cool the bottle, although it works better at a high speed. Be careful however, driving one-handed is dangerous and requires extra concentration, and watch the cars that are passing by so you hand don't get ripped by one!!

The salt doesn't make the water any colder. It lowers the termperature that the water will freeze at. But you won't get below 32 degrees anyway, because you have water and ice in a bowl at room temperature.
So effectively, your demo is to cool drinks rapidly by swirling them in a bowl of ice water.

If you don't got ice, there's another way to do that.
Use a large bowl (over 6 liters) fill it with cold water. Now add 500grams of Salt, and mix it.
The salt will cool the water down near 0°c and that cools your stuff easy too :)

In Chemistry class, I made ice cream using that. Add milk, vanilla, and sugar into a ziploc bag and massage the bag in the ice-salt-water mixture until it has the consistency of ice cream. Viola and it's ready to be served.

Antifreeze in your car works the same way. When you add a solute to water you lower the freezing point and raise the boiling point. In the case of a car its ethylene glycol, in this case its salt. However, adding salt to icewater will not make the coke cool faster. It will not "superchill" the coke. Give me a break, please. The same result could be obtained by placing a can in a bucket of icewater without salt.

1. Room temperature soda is only 80 degrees out of the can - if the room you are in is 80 degrees! How can you make a generalized statemement that room temp soda is "almost 80 degrees right out of the can"? In the winter in my basement room temperature soda is more like 65 degrees right out of the can! Duh!
2. This "chilling method" is ancient. I mean, that is how you make home-churned ice cream (ice and coarse salt around the churn), etc.
I still can't figure out how people make money off the obvious. Guess there are a lot of dumb people out there watching Metacafe! :)

of using the salt. pure water at earth sea level atmospheric pressure freezes at 32....water with salt dissolved in it does not...or sugar,or ethelene glycol or about 1000 other things... It can get a lot colder before going solid. your freezer is probably at 10 or 20 below---so the cubes are far below freezing....that is why you add the salt to the water, Then the saltwater can remain liquid and get colder than 32.....and water has a lot more surface contact than solid cubes... just remember to put your pop in the fridge! You don't need the salt, because the water is not going to get colder than 32 degrees anyway. Ice melts to water at 32 degrees, and the salt doesn't make the water any colder than that. The cans of pop will chill just as fast in icy cold water as icy cold SALTY water.

The maker of this video needs to go back to school. If you have a bowl of water and ice, the water will never even approach the regular freezing point (32 F), so it doesn't matter whether you put salt in or not. All the salt does is lower the freezing point. So, no need for the salt, you'll get the same effect with water and ice.

just made a fool of yourself. The salt changes the waters freezing temp from 32 deg F to 26 deg F. Try it and you'll see. You can even freeze that soda with salted icewater if you use enough ice and salt. Haven't you ever wondered why you put salt in the ice when making homemade icecream?

The ice will melt anyway! The water won't be super cooled, maybe the ice will melt faster, but that's really it. You aren't going to end up with liquid water that is below 32 degrees Fahrenheit.

The temp was above 32 deg F. A few minutes after I added the salt the temp was 26 deg F. Now wouldn't that mean the mixture was below 32 deg F? I even stood a glass of water in it to see if it would freeze it. Guess what, It did freeze the water along the edge of the glass. It's a very cool trick! You shouldn't take my word. To convince yourself you should try it. It's very easy and very neat!
