  Walking with the tree just fanned the flame and made it burn faster. He should have laid it its side on the grounhd or table, flame-side up, and then thrown something on it to smother the fire -- a coat, the table cloth, even a dinner plate might have worked. That would have at least saved the money already clipped onto the tree and been less dangerous than running through the crowded room carrying a giant ball of fire!
