The Potala Palace, a majestic ancient complex on Lhasa's Red Hill, was originally built by King Songtsen Gampo in the seventh century for the princess he was to marry. At 2 1/2 miles above sea level, the palace has been both the home and burial site of many Dali Lamas. Buddhists from all over the world make the pilgrimage to pray for compassion and pay homage to Buddha.
