International
This is a bad Accident, the first wreck is not all bad but what happens after is terrible.
The (most) injured track worker was Rob Dages. Yes, he lived. The relevant parts of the story are (lifted from his account and news):
Rob was seriously injured on Saturday, July 7, 2001, when he was struck by a rider in Turn 2 at (New Hampshire International Speedway) Loudon, while clearing the track of a previous incident. Rob's actual injuries are: fractured pelvis and tailbone, bruised ribs (one broken), an impressively ugly gash in the left forearm, an equally scary gash in the head, and lots of bumps and bruises. The other track worker Rick Martin suffered only bruises and scrapes. The rider who hit the two, Rick Currier suffered similar non-fatal injuries.
Thanks to "observer" for relavent info! I'm relived and I hope not only are they all alive but able to resume life without any major handicap.
That was pretty gruesome to watch and like many of the comments TOTALLY AVOIDABLE!
I hope those on what ever board of racing get the asses kicked.
Rob is fine today, no lasting injuries, he races when he has time. Rick Currier (the racer who hit the workers) did suffer some lasting long-lasting effects from his closed head injury. He was not breathing after the crash and was resucitated on-scene. Rick Martin had a minor leg injury.
To JastIce below.... All accidents are totally avoidable, but only if you avoid anything which could be dangerous. Racing is dangerous, people get hurt. It's usually not cornerworkers, but it happens. The incident was examined and some protocols were changed, no one got their asses kicked. This corner is handled more cautiously than before, but workers still work the corner "hot", and no similar incident has occurred before or since this one.
In case you're wondering, I was there and watched it happen and helped clean up the mess afterward. Racing was resumed about two hours later.
i thought the rider who hit the two track workers split in half.
By unlcesam 1152336365 Reply Spam [+2] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveLooked like 2 track workers were hit. One of them spit in 2. Is that Rob Dages? If thats the case, there is no way he survived ( unless there is proof somewhere).
Are you sure???!?!
jkb
No one splitted in two... Go get glasses
By Naardenhg 1151241675 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removetake a good look at the video again.
By dave mech 1147952623 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removei don't get it iev never been to 1 of those thing but why they stop when someones hurt??
By @cat 1141829550 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveHaving a motorcycle race on anything other than road courses is a recipe for trouble. On a converted oval like this it's nearly suicidal. And the track is Dover Downs, New Hampshire, and the race (or the course, anyway) is laid out for the American Superbikes series.
Look at it again. The first rider goes down at :15. Three riders pass within the next fifteen seconds and probably had no warning, so that's not their fault and they did a good job to stay out of the way.
There is a near miss at :52, thirty seven seconds after. Where the hell were the yellow flags? It's amateur hour not to have a full course yellow if that bike hasn't moved in thirty seconds.
Then comes the big crash at 1:00. These guys crossed the start/finish line not fifteen seconds earlier, so they should have seen a yellow flag by that point. Whether it's the race organizers, race marshalls or riders to blame (or both), somebody f***ed up big time.
Then again, that is a NASCRASH track....
The worst part is most track workers like those hit are volunteers who do it for fun. Some races and series have them sign liability waivers as well.
That's turn 2 you're seeing. There was a waving yellow in turn 2 which is not visible in the video, there was a stationary yellow in Turn 1. It's easy to Monday morning quarterback the actions of all involved here, but this was a case of several things going wrong at once, what those workers were doing has been done successfully hundreds of times in that corner. Cornerworking, like racing, is dangerous, and sooner or later, accidents will happen.
By cornerworker 1166205412 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removecalm your emotions down and watch the episode carefully. you'll see, the zoomed big red thing isn't anyone's leg or smth, its a part of a bike's cowl, as well as all the rest smaller red parts. the bike and it's driver were red, that's it.
in F1, there r always flags shown immediately, as soon as something not even serious at first sight happens.
this 1 doesn't seem to be safe at all...
...i saw this video a while back and i thought one of those dudes got chopped in half.... and the other decapitated.. or something like that. poor video quality... well.. better than most, but still not as good as i wish it could be

By jason mcb 1201834441 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Remove"Moto GP" ?! Those are Superbike motorcycle's ... that who crashes is Carl Fogarty on the Ducati Desmosedicci... MotoGp... lol :))
By w3stc0astpimp 1161465916 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThat was a horrible crash and it pisses me off even more when they didn't stop the race while the two guys were out there. They should have waved the red flag as soon as they entered the track
By JAH1298 1156195186 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveWorkers on the track are not cause for a red flag. If that were the case, a great number of races would never be completed. It's not unusual to have a dozen or more crashes in a race. The initial crash is relatively minor.

I FEEL SO SORRY FOR THAT WORKER!:(
Unconscious bliss in this case. What a bunch of dumb F**ks . The whole lot of them. There have been caution systems in racing for years.
( whew glad I spell checked ignorance. I never would have heard the end of that. )
I don't feel sorry for them.. I wouldn't want anyone to feel sorry for me.
By frambrianna 1150928809 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Remove...they are all alive, so i can laugh my ass of!
something like that happend when i was cart racing, and i delocated my shoulder...
hurts!
lol
What I don't understand is why these two idiots never tried to help the poor bastard who's crawling on all fours to the side but seem to be more interested in picking up the bike in mid-traffic!
Very stupid move there without yellow flags.
the reason why they had to get the bike was so that no one else hit it (except that went horribly wrong) and if the guy can get away on his own then the main objective is to prevent any more accidents (again, this went horribly wrong)
By ThereIsAWay 1149532541 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removewhy didn't no one warned the racers that there were an acident after the curve? in america the yellow flag is not used in races?
By Muh 1148867200 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removethe driver from the first crash came back out on to the track to help in the end

By TH1RT3EN95 1138397317 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThe race was stopped following the second crash. Riders don't stop on a red flag, they discontinue racing and proceed around the track to pit-in. Stopping on the track creates more dangerous situations.
