  • m-60 video

I was once a door gunner on a UH-!B helicopter in the 1st Cav in Viet Nam in 1967. The aircraft carried 48 2.75" rockets and 2 M-60 machine guns, one in each door. The weapon in the video appears to be a modified and improved version of the guns I had, which would overheat quickly under sustained fire. The longest burst I ever fired was about 600 rounds on the Cambodian border near Pleiku in the central highlands. The barrel was cherry red. I haven't fired a machine gun since then and it brought back some memories. I am proud to have been a soldier in Viet Nam and I'm sorry we lost the war. So are millions of Cambodians, Laotians and Vietnamese who are now dead, murdered by the communists.

    • In a PIG'S EYE, Sir.

I was just passing through MetaCafe. It is nearly 0200 HST, here in Kailua. No, our Nation did not lose the Viet Nam war. Yes, the Cambodians, the Laotians and the Vietnamese - alive, and dead, can owe any breath they draw or could have drawn, to what you did. I understand we can visit a Memorial in Washington DC, dedicated to those who also gave their last full measure of devotion. In a very different place, in a very different time. Nonetheless, the American writing this now was born in 1962. My battle was fought in a different decade. My Honor and Respect, for you, is Profound. It is well-placed. Semper Fidelis. Stephen.

    • No Loss, Honorable Sir

      Sir,
I agree with the poster, "SpectreDead" in response to your statement, "we lost the war." Sir, we may not have achieved the outcome desired. We did lose thousands upon thousands of lives. But, Losing, was not one of the things we did. My brother served in the Company of the infamous hero, Lt. Calley. I served as a 2nd luitenant in the army, only months after the order came down the pipe to quit sending troups to Nam. I respect that your opinion / statement of "we lost the war", was meant as I mentioned earlier, not achieving the desired outcome. Very well understood, we as american's, generally prefer a complete success.
I take a moment to thank you for your time, your risk, your many sacrifices, to serve our country in such a dangerous role. It wouldn't matter if you were a PVC, or an O6 behind the lines. There was danger, and you took the risk. God Bless you, and yours, Thank you again, with all honor and respect, 2nd Luitenant - discharged. PLL.

Im a Vietnamese and was born after the war, of course i've heard this and that from different ppl about the war but its the past, why not let it be???

    • oh so

i guess the past has nothing to do with our country's history huh? if we let every war be then, how our we gonna learn from our mistakes / successes? they cant let it go because it was a part of their life. if you go to war, then i bet you would not just be able to let it go. war goes alot deeper than just your mind. it is a aprt of you for the rest of your life. these men deserve to be told that thanks to them we are what we are today. so if you please, you can let it go. but dont ask these men to.

  • Great memories!

Hearing that gun sing brings back great memories. The antique M-60 I had when in the Army was very worn in, loose, and the best thing I ever had in the field. Yah, it crammed once in a while, but nothing that a 3 second clear couldn't fix. Myself, the asst gunner and the pig man could carry about 12 cases of ammo. Remember, there is a 20+lb gun, spare barrel, tri-pod, and the T&E on top of the weight of all that ammo. This version in the vid must be a modified metal of some sort (I didnt listen to the speaker) since I was always trained to swap out the barrel at around 200rds of continuous fire. I wonder if Ted Nugent owns one...

  • We didn't lose? News to me.

Last I checked, Saigon fell to the NVA on April 30, 1975 and was renamed "Ho Chi Minh City," the communists now rule what was once the north and the south, and we have nothing to show for it. Or am I mistaken? Did we MEAN for it to be called "The Socialist Republic of Vietnam?

C'mon, folks. Denial ain't just a river in Egypt. While we won tactically for the most part we lost strategically. To think otherwise is naive jingoism, and downright delusional.

As to the gun, kudos to these guys for taking the world's largest bolt action single shot rifle and actually making it WORK. When I was in we couldn't get the things to work.

  • AFJI Shootout MK43 Endurance Test

The purpose of the test was to challenge claims that the M60 mean time between failures was 825 rounds assuming the gun was used in a normal short burst manner. We decided the best way to prove the capability of the MK43 (M60E4) was to fire the weapon in a continuous burst of 850 rounds. This was done on a used weapon with approximately 15,000 rounds already through the barrel and as the video shows the weapon performed perfectly. To the comments about the accuracy, it should be noted that there was so much smoke and heat coming off the gun that it was impossible to see the target and that if it had been an accuracy test the bursts would have been much shorter (3-5rounds). The test was conducted by employees of Special Tactical Services and was the 3rd of nine successful tests. The comments regarding actual use of a weapon in this manner during combat are unrealistic and there was no intent of any political statement intended. the problem is you cant carry much ammo. I had 800rounds and extra barrel . the asst gunner carried 500rnds then what? That was 23lbs + 13lbs and ammo so it dosent mater about the rate of fire over 1.45 sec
so the dc46 and all the rest can kiss off

I wonder what the tempiture of the rifle is, and how much barrel warp it gets when it is fired that long. If it does warp its not a new invention or an improvment, just high end material. If it does not warp, its amazing.

You may find this extremely hard to believe but there are still a good many people in this country that believe the government was not created to change our diapers. The people in New Orleans were told to evacuate. They chose not to. Now some of them would like the Feds to build them a new house, clean up the mess etc. while they laze around and watch. The problem with this country is we'll do exactly that. And if thats not bad enough we'll even do it in every other country.

The War in Iraq is not about "Shoot em' up Bang-Bang." It IS about Nation Building. It better be. Insomuch the French did their part during our (the) American Revolution, ulterior motives notwithstanding - they were there. I will, leave the specific historical research of that time to my MetaCafe community. Suffice to say, after the French sailed away, (some did not) what was left was a milieu on which to build. My ancestors, to me, can today, write this. I am not of French descent. I am of American Descent, a descent where a people pour their best and brightest into a cause worthy of more than what they can have, today. For a People, that could not expect anything, ever. Get the gist. Stephen.

the slower rate of fire allows the gun to operate at a sustained rate longer than those operating with very high ROF. The barrel tends too heat up too much, too easy for high ROF (hence the mini-gun multibarrel solution). The m60's 7.62 round has excellent stopping power and won't be factored too much by airborne particles and blades of grass. SpectreDeed, I still have my m14 with me and so far it's getting the job done a lot better than my m4 RIS. HOOAH

The M60 though much improved from the VietNam version still is substandard the NATO standard FN MAG58 has been adopted for General US issue as the M240. Better built less sensitive to ammo/and battlefield conditions. H&K also built a gpmg based on the G3 action I think it's the 21.

    • Sir, I stand corrected. In my e-mail fi...

This is a lifted quote. I fully endorse. "... The M240 Machine Gun: 7.62 Nato (.308) cal. belt fed machine gun, developed to replace the old M-60 (what a beautiful weapon that was!!) Thumbs up. Accurate, reliable, and the 7.62 round puts em down. Originally developed as a vehicle mounted weapon, more and more are being dismounted and taken into the field by infantry. The 7.62 round chews up the structure over there." I am off quote now. The fact that politicians, in their "expediency games" have "kicked cans down the road," to the point where we arrive at now. I have not finished adressing the European "choices" to maintain a status quo. No, plenty of blame is not to be had by all. That discussion ended when Our Teufel Hunden began to close... Fielding the Best and Brightest to, fix, what should have been fixed 10-odd years ago. With the best information. At the end of the day, I will accept nothing less than United States Marines closing with and destroying the enemy. Semper Fidelis. Stephen.

  • Peace Through Superior Firepower.

In Iraq, more of our gents will be coming home in one piece thanks to this weapon. The slower "cyclic" rate of (sustained) fire was a (good) design trade-off that factors in internal wear and tear, weapon controllability & intelligent expenditure of ammo. I prefer a robust weapon that will put rounds ON target in a controlled manner. The 7.62 round is far and away the preferred ammunition. Does any of my Marine Brothers fondly remember the M14? Stephen.

I was Army not Marines but I remember when they took our M14s away and gave us the M16. We thought it was a toy and wanted our M14s back but after humping the boonies in Viet Nam we were glad we didn't have the weight of the M14. I still consider th M14 a much better rifle. AIRBORNE

  • rate of fire

850 rounds a minute is quite slow in comparison to most sub machine guns
the only things the m60 has is its 7.62mm nato (.308win) and is belt fed not the greatest machine gun by a long shot
if your interested about full auto weapons check out heckler and kosch high rate of fire and better built

By shifty 1134630709 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • Actually...

It didn't put out 850 rounds pr. minute, but 850 rounds in 1 minute 45 seconds... That put's it a rate of 8 rounds pr. second or 485 rounbds pr. minute, wich is quite slow...

When i was in the Army, we had the German MG3 7,62 mm (.308) as a machinegun, and that was fun weapon. It put out 1,200 rounds pr. minute, or 20 rounds pr. second... But as mentioned, the barrel tends to get a bit hot on these high-rate MG's...

As for rifles, we had the HK G3A3, also a 7,62 mm (.308), and although a little heavy, it was a superb weapon with a cyclic rate of 600 rounds pr minute, or 10 rounds pr. second... A slightly optimistic figure i might add... ;-)

By Glockie 1135989947 Reply Spam Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • Yeah.

I agree, but the Heckler and Koch submachine guns are not the fastest available, nor the best, but they are widely used because their 9mm parabellum cartridge is an excellent stopping missile. You shouldnt really compare them as they are weapons in different categories. The M60 is slow compared to other weapons such as whatever make the standard helicopter mounted minigun is.
