The "champ" was and still is a chump. Cassius Clay was a coward who got out of serving the country during time of war by claiming to be a Muslim. He was too non-violent to serve in the Army along side of his fellow American draftees, but he was violent enough to fight in the ring for 1 million dollars a pop. I can think of at least 56,000 Americans who would have gladly stayed at home instead of going to Viet Nam, but they had no choice it was either serve in the Army, go to prison, or go to Canada and leave their families behind. The only difference was that they weren't some rich boxer with the NAACP behind them.

Every war is about the rich increasing their wealth, there is no such thing as a "just" war. Cassius Clay could have served his country in a non-combat MOS (military occupational specialty) as a Chaplain, medical assistant, cook,or some other non-violent job title. I object to the fact that he put himself above his fellow Americans by refusing to serve the country that had made him rich. He thought that being rich and black made him somehow more important or special than poor blacks or whites who had to serve and in many cases die so that he could continue to get rich off of this country. He made his living off of violence and to claim that going to war was against his religion because he praticed non-violence was a slap in the face to all who served with honor.

As he has proven through the following 40 years, Ali is a devout believer and practitioner of all he claimed back then. Unless you would refuse -all- religious deferment, you must accept his.

If far more people refused the draft, the war in Vietnam would have stopped much faster, and saved lives on both sides, without changing the outcome. If more people refuse to fight, governments would be more careful before they start wars. They would check that the people are really behind them, before projecting their views, their standards, their culture into someone else's country half way around the world.

I wasn't aware you were keeping score on how many breaks JFK took as compared to Bush? Who cares???? If you will remember right, JFK had alot of people against him also, as does Bush.
