Group therapy in a drug and alcohol rehab environment is defined as two or more clients meeting with a qualified professional with the purpose of improving and/or overcoming substance abuse behavior. Components of group therapy in substance abuse treatment include establishing group rules, following up with clients on previous meeting goals, introducing the meetings topic, providing education, role playing, discussing/practicing coping skills, processing information, and supporting/installing hope amongst the participants.
