    I work for the fire service. The advise we give out now is to turn the heat off and get out. Too many people werre getting injured, either making the towel too wet or pulling it off to throw over further, and pulling the pot with it.

      Why not just put the lid on the pot and that will cut the O2 to the fire.
      No need for the H2O. Then it is safer to turn off the heat.

      Same with oven fire. Never open the door. Leave it shut and turn off the
      heat. Peace out.

      it happened to me yesterday, i panicked wet a towel i throw it immediately over the fire but i overshoot it when i pulled it just pulled down the fire and burned my workshop. panic kills

      Turn off the heat/fire and put (better throw) a big metal lid over and get out of the kitchen. The wet towel could be risky, it's difficult to act calmly.
