  • Facts about auroras

The magnetic field of the earth is shaped like a donut, wrapping around the globe with the holes of the donut lined up with the north and south poles. When solar radiation reaches the earth, most of it is deflected around the globe by the magnetic field, however some of it spirals down into the holes, ionizing particles in the earths atmosphere and creating the effect. This effect is called the aurora borealis in the north pole, and the aurora australis in the south pole.
