So that there is no question in the mind of the listener, I rely principally on images of the LP and LP jacket in order to document the authenticity of historically important recordings such as these.

In this 1964 recording, Wilhelm Kempff (1895-1991) performs "Für Elise," also known as Bagatelle No. 25 in A minor (WoO 59). I created this video from the LP depicted above, "Beethoven: Bagatelles - Wilhelm Kempff, Piano," issued in 1965 by Deutsche Grammophon, serial number 138934.

The notes (penned by the Greek musicologist Constantin Floros, b. 1930) on the reverse side of the LP jacket discuss briefly how Beethoven came to compose this work:

"The romantically poignant piano piece 'Für Elise' reveals one aspect of the 'sensitive' Beethoven. He probably wrote it for his friend Therese Malfatti, to whom he was devotedly attached, and whom (in the spring of 1810) he hoped to marry. L. Nohl, the first publisher of this piece, most probably misread the dedication of the manuscript, which has since disappeared: it is more likely to have been 'Für Therese' than 'Für Elise.' Significantly enough, if this was the case, the manuscript was once in the possession of Frau Therese von Drosdick, nee Malfatti."

Another work that piano students might find useful to review is the Minuet (7), BWV Anh. 116, of Johann Sebastian Bach, performed by Jörg Demus: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vSTcozRIR4s
