You're stupid! The probability of events like these aren't based on how many people there are on the planet, but rather based on how often the initial incident occurs. For the car tire example it would be a one in a million chance that the tire would reattach itself for everytime a tire falls off a car, which is infinitely different than your asinine assertion that the tire would reattach itself for every one million people on Earth. When a scientist is saying "1 in a million" he/she is oversimplifying for the public. And also implying, usually, that it's impossible to take into consideration all aspects to give an accurate probability factor.

Ironically, a probability that large given as a precise round number is the first sign that it isn't an actual mathematical prediction.

There is nothing smart about that guy's comment. Like you said, the odds are given for one particular event. Plus "one chance in a million" is used more as a saying than an actual scientific probability.

Scientist are aware that you can NOT take ALL aspects/factors into account. IF you indeed could take ALL factors into account you would be able to predict something to happen with a probability of 100% or 0%. Now in this world there yet no man or machine that can do this.

Look up the "Uncertainty principle" probability plays its roll in quantum physics, basically when you get really small there are actual accuratenesses that arn't absolute, and cannot be calculated no matter how much information you get. This is actually the premise of quantum physics. It gets really freaky actually, in some cases a partical can exist in more then one place at once. No one really understands quantum physics, we just go along with the equations and experiments.

As of today, the world population is actually about 6.71 billion. (It will reach 7 billion on or about April 10, 2010.) That makes the odds ever better and what is referred to as 'theory of large numbers' is actually the probability theory. I've never heard of a tornado reconstructing a house after demolishing it but then, as you point out, with numbers this great, anything is possible.
