I've moved from Europe two years ago and still I'm walking into doors because in Europe most doors open inwards and in America they open outwards.
Thirty years of opening them one way confuses the heck out of me when I have to open them the other way.
Fortunately I'm a quicker thinker then this idiot and stop myself from making a complete fool of myself by opening the door the right way the second time.

Euhm.... All doors open inwards in shops and stuff... otherwise people in the street would get it in their face if they wouldnt be paying attention... come to think of it, all doors open inwards into buildings period, only escape doors usually dont.

doors in commerial or public buildings must swing outwards to let people out in case of emergency. The main door to any buiding is considered to be a emergency and or fire exit and under Law almost everywhere including Britain. The door must open outward. There are some older building that dont have to get up to newer building and fire codes until they make a rennovation in some countries. But in America all Main Entry way doors must open outward with no exceptions. All doors labeled as a Fire or Emergency Exit or even just EXIT also must open outward in Britain as well. Most banks only have 2 exits. One for the public and one Deliveries or emergencies, and those doors also open outward.

In america our doors swing both ways or out. You have to pull to get in from the street. Even the automatic doors that swing in, you can exit from when pushed on. Its a safety feature so people dont get trampled to death in case of a fire, or robbery. Even Rotating doors will collapse and open outward if pushed on both sides of the door.

If you live in america Lebowski and you find a main entry door labeled as an EXIT that doesnt open outward or a public building. Call the city and complain and within a week it will open outward

i don't know about every bank. That kind of seems like a wast of money but it is a neat system.

wow, waste of money. Hows that? He didnt get away with anything and no one got hurt. You cant steal what you cant get. He has no reason to take a hostage or hurt anyone. He cant get the money so he just leaves. the same measure applies to armored cars that get held up. If the hopper or the guy who takes the money in and out of a bank gets taken by gunpoint, the driver of the armored car drives away. This has proven very very effective. The crooks dont have a reason to hang around and leave. No armored car personal have ever been held hostage or shot after the driver has driven away. If you take away the reason for the crook to be there then they dont stay around.

This was a bank in a London. I said putting this in every bank would be a waist of money.

What i am saying is a lot of rural banks it would be a waist of money. The almost never get robbed and when the do usually the person makes off with way less money then it would cost to put that system in.

Of all the banks by me only one has been robed in my lifetime. The guy made off with around 300 dollars. He was caught later that day.

Now if you spend 20k in each bank putting this in. That would have been a few hundred thousand spent. What would the pay off have been. Oh the bank would have not been without the $300 for a few hours. Either way no one has been hurt by a bank robber at a bank within 100 miles of me in my life time.

Where do you stop maybe every store needs this. Maybe the grade school lunch line or the grill scouts selling cookies should have one. A system like this only has a pay off at a bank that is likely to get robed at some point before the system wears out and needs replaced.

do you think the bank intentionally allow the robber to escape by not closing the front door, because if the robber got trapped he might do *more* damage in his frustration, ie breaking things, holding hostages, etc.

almost all HOUSE doors open in. Unless its an apartment buiding. The main doors into an apartment building must open out. The indivudual appartment door will open in. Apartment buildings, commercial and public buildings must open out if they are labeled as an exit or if it is the only public entrance/exit like in most big cities.

Think logically for a min. If that bank was full of just say 50 people and there was a fire and they all tried to run out of the building....they would get trampled to death. If you live in america look better at the EXIT doors they open outwards. All exits must permit a certain amount of people to exit through that door within 1 min. Check the BOCA manuals or call the city where you live and ask. You will see. Another reason that doors open outward in commercial buildings is a secondary concern. Its harder to break into a building with a door that opens out.

In case your wondering how i know...Im a Firefighter, Paramedic and as part of my job we do inspections on all buildings. One of our main priorities is to make sure the EXIT's are clear and free of obstructions and they MUST open out. If we find a building with a EXIT that does not open out, we fine them and give them 1 week to fix it or we shut them down. Personal Houses do not follow the same building and fire codes. Unless they are converted into a business or a group home. Then all doors must be an EXIT and open out.

Did you know that rotating doors will collapse when you push on both sides of the door so it provides a duel exit instead of a spinning one way exit. Did you know that you can push out an automatic door that opens in? like the ones in most department stores.
