Seinheisers are expensive because they don't just physically cancel out noise, they emit this electronic pulse, that's why it gets quieter, because that sound blocks out other sounds.

but it is not ok if u are a musician or a sound engineer as you need those sound quality from the earphone like seinheiser, shure or ultimate ears.

I can't believe I have never thought of this! If they only made noise canceling headphones cheaper, we wouldn't have to do this...we should start making these and selling them, so people stop buying the expensive headphones.

I bought some AU$10 headphones, installed them in the exact earmuffs (AU$25), and they work surprisingly well. If there's a radio in the background, it won't eliminate it entirely, but I can now listen to quieter music and not be too bothered. Chatter is reduced to be still audible, but you can't really tell what they are saying.

However, I do wear glasses (thin frame) and the pads on the earmuffs do press them in tightly, even after adjustment of the earmuffs. I took my glasses off and found them to be far more comfortable. Another reason to get laser surgery. :)

great idea, but these aren't noise canceling headphones, they're just noise reducing...

I have done this before with a set of gunshot earmuffs and the earbud sized headphones that came with my Mp3 player.
I just put in the buds and put on the earmuffs over them.
I was able to cut my lawn without having to get a pair of larger louder headphones.

That's not noise canceling, that's noise blocking. Noise canceling earphones send out negative sound waves against the soundwaves the noise makes, so it cancels out.

When I saw this genius idea, I went to Home Depot too see the earmuffs there, and there was a 21Db one, and i got confused with the ratings, does this mean this cancels more or less than 23Db?

TO think i was $10 away from saving up for those Noise Canceling Gaming Headsets....

im a huge fan of your videos kipkay, but i just wanted to add that possibly the reason the sennheiser earphones cost so much more is that they are of much higher sound quality than the other ones you used. anyways i really liked it, like all of your other vids

What many people don't realize is that noise canceling often treats audio as "noise" and reduces its quality significantly. So $170 for headphones that make my muzak sound like it's coming from an answering machine with a pillow over it? No thanks! This passive solution is much better.

I don't mean to be a dick about this, but that's not an acutal "noise canceling" headphone. That's not how noise cancelation work. But it is a good idea. The only thing is that you may have a cheap pair of headphones that blocks out a good ammount of abient noise, but the quality isn't comparable to the pcx250. If yo dont mind paying $170, it's better off to get the sennheiser.

Just stick your earbuds in your ears and then put on the earmuffs. What could be easier?

These headphones are NOT noise canceling, but rather noise ISOLATING! There's an important difference that I regularly see people swap these terms like they're interchangeable, but they're not. If you want to make truly noise canceling headphones, look for the guide over at HeadWize.

I picked up a pair of 'Silencio' brand shooting muffs on clearance at Walmart. I only got them so my 3 year old son could enjoy the Cleveland Air Show back in September--They were about $10.88 I think. My son enjoyed the show without getting his ears hurt like the day before. Anyway, my son had a pair of Sony over the head earphones he broke--but the speakers were fine. I pried off the earpads on the silencio's and slipped the speakers in, and filled away just a bit of the plastic seal so it wouldnt pinch the wires. Results were surprising for spare parts.

Brilliant idea! Has anyone else tried this out? I definitely want to try this; can someone tell me if this will drown out voices and bass heard through walls in an apartment (without music playing)?

maybe you should return the senheizers. and use those greatones or give them to your wife or someting.

More misinformation.. Your headphones don't cancel the noise but they dampen it.
These expensive ones use a microphone and a circuit to flip the wave of the noise outside and create destructive interference.. another method would be to actually build your self the circuit that they use in those headphones..
And just for outside information... check polarity on your speakers if youve wired them yourself.. having wrong polarity can also create this destructive interference and cancel out all that bass that you wish you had..

i am definitely doin it, (partly because i cant afford the senheiser/bose noise canceling headphones) but the only other reason why is the sound quality is so much better, there is just no comparison even with it being much more quiet

These are not noise-cancelling headphones. They are noise attenuating headphones, which are a completely different animal. If you tried to sell these as noise-cancelling headphones you'd get sued (and lose) because they do not actively cancel noise, they passively attenuate it.

wow dude your really good at what you do i made some of these for my electric drum set and guitar and their sweet good thing i didnt spend $170 mine only cost like $5 to make because i already have those earmuffs

If you don't like the quality with a little pair of cheap headphones just use a better kind, like I did with a good kind that snapped in half. This isn't magic trick, you don't have to do it exactly how he does it.

The key words are 'noise cancelling'. This method is obviously not cancelling the noise in the true sense of electronic cancelling. And you do say 'passive' which is another word for 'don't do anything'. So these new headphones don't do anything but block out a percentage of certain frequencies. Why not just get some ear bud headphones, use them and wear the ear muffs over them. Much easier, cheaper and doesn't require taiking things apart.
