Some cool physics experiment
This is an excellent demo of super conductivity. The liquid is liquid nitrogen. The disk is a magnet. The black block is the super conducting (SC) material (but becomes SC only below its critical temperature, somewhat higher than liquid nitrogen).
When warm, the block has no particular magnetic / electric properties. When cooled, it becomes a SC. One of the properties of a SC is that magnetic fields can be pinned in place in the SC.
A moving magnetic field generates eddie currents within conductors, and can be felt as a resistance to relative motion. In most materials, this current quickly decays due to electrical resistance. In SC, eddie currents do not decay, but instead will tend to hold the magnetic field in place.
Buy one of those round or spherical supermagnets (they are cheap, but NOT A TOY) online. Get a THICK copper tube. The thicker the wall, the better. Drop the magnet down the tube. Notice 2 things: It takes longer than it "should" for the magnet to fall out the other side. The magnet never touches the side.
You can get a little levitation on just a copper block (haven't tried it yet) and a super magnet. I bought a bunch because they are so useful in the STEEL garage I have, as well as fun. They are nickel PLATED ceramic and brittle. You let 2 big ones slam together and you have instant shrapnel moving at VERY high speeds.
Even with a block of ROOM temperature copper you will notice the effect. As the magnet approaches, it creates micro-currents that act as a opposing (same pole) electromagnet which will make the magnet feel as if it is in quicksand if you try to scoot it around the surface, roll it off by tilting or even settle down slowly if dropped on the copper.
i really need it for my new video with my guinea-pig
By Victoria Schattauer 1194365347Edmund Scientific at www. Scientifics Online. com. I know they're not all that hard to find. Google "super conductivity".
(Sometimes, you need words longer than 15 letters/4 syllables)
During high school (30 some years ago in an other country, other language) I for the life of me could not understand my teacher's explanations, so I failed miserably. I wish you were around. The cleanest, clearest explanation. Thank you, I'm not entirely stupid after all.
By photoworker 1145165756Honest Abe never finnished school, and failed at business more times than I can count. But he did manage to become a lawyer and , oh yeah one of the most loved presidents of the United States. So, yeah...It don't make you stupid. Just not focused on the rite thing at the rite time.
By Nigh 1149221895Is this explaining something about Abe or about America.
Having a president who's been knocked in the head seems to be a tradition.
Actually alot of people that do horrible at school are geniouses, Einstein failed the math test to become a mechanic, FYI
By AK420 1145603653but the videos not as amazing as the one where they do it to a live frog!
By frshhh 1141912952I remember seeing that and it truly rocks - I swear the frog looked confused as he rotated in mid air.
Those bearings as well in the hard drives (if memory serves) used to be magneto-ferrofluid bearings effectively a fluid bearing with magnetic liquid allowing the hard drive to settle accurately while maintaining a hermetic seal to keep moisture and particles out of the hard drive platter area, and as mentioned you dont have bearing wear.
If you Google "frog floating on magnet" the first or second link will take you to a site that has the frog video and several other objects floating in a magnetic field. You'll have to follow the links, since I can't post a direct link here. There is also information about how it works, if you feel like learning something :P
By -anomie- 1189843249they float the frog by placing it in a really powerful eletromagnet ... and seeing how alll mattter is composed of atoms .... and have very minute charges they interact witht the very powerful magnet by essentially pullin a lil bit form all sides thus suspendin the frog in mid air ..... but seriuosly poor frog it cant get out ..... its just stuck there under the wim of ppl ..... thatd be coool to try thou....but itll take a bigg magnet ... or jus go to space.......in spac ... no one can hear u scream .... well sorta its just muffled (actually no air so no ... i jus like tpying crp .... weeeeee ....... fear my nonsense)
and y is it u cant type words with more than 15 letters i beg to ask?
they don't let you use words with more then 15 letter to keep people from putting web adresses in their coments
By thatoneguy 1144475407Actually, this is done completely by magic. This happened because Jesus wanted it to. I bet you believe in evolution too, huh?
By Thomas Fullery 1167284563now can anyone say that david blaine and criss angel cant levitate????.... its all chemicals ...for levitation its helium

MAGLEV train comment guy is right; Meisner effect, known for, oh, at least 80 years... However, the coolant appears to be liquid nitrogen, which means the metal is not typical type 4 superconductor (eg. niobium), but probably "high temp" superconductor. That is, relatively modern variation of Meisner effect.
By wfp 1135658551magnetic field secluded by temp in direction of absolute zero? or water floating.
By petr188 1265778566this effect is called the meissner effect, where the magnet is levitated due to the repusion caused by the eddy currents that are induced in in such a direction in the superconducting material, that they repel the magnetic field of the magnet on top and hence levitate it. the material at the bottom is made to superconduct by adding liquid nitrogen to it.
By TIME-OUT 1188469098That is so awesome. I did that at work in 1988. We had a lot of LN in the building and I bought the ceramic SC and the magnet in a mail order catalog Edmond Scientific. I showed it to all my coworkers. Physics is so fun, but requires discipline in order to attain stuff like this. Even this can be dangerous in the wrong hands. I also had some liquid helium in one of our experiments, our dewar had a leak and air got in and froze. Looking at frozen air now that is bizarre.

It’s a great site that I recently joined with some skepticism after I saw a similar link on this site a few weeks ago.Ive already made 200 bucks, check the forum for payment proof! To my surprise they have over 100,000 members and they are growing rapidly. I am sure you will find the community and the site as exciting as I did! Give it a shot, its completely free! Wishing you all the success that I have had and much more. Good luck!
The block in the center of the bowl is a high temperature superconducter such as Yttrium barium copper oxide. (High temperature is considered to be above 77 K, or -196 C, the boiling point of liquid nitrogen) The effect which floats a magnet is called the Meissner effect. This is the occurence of the magnetic field inside a superconductor becoming zero. This will levitate a magnet as long as the magnetic field does not exceed the critical magnetic field. The magnet stays still because the field lines are not perfect due to flaws in the crystaline structure.
By kevinlarson 1151172775I forgot to add an interesting application of this effect to my comment. This effect allows a magnet to float with no friction, one could spin a very heavy magnet to very high speeds as a method of storing enormous amounts of energy in the rotational kinetic energy of the magnet.
By kevinlarson 1151172988... i believe that is the scientific term for what is happening in that video
By CoconutAndy 1150327479..Wish my science teacher could show us stuff like this...There again, they cant afford new desks nevermind Liquid Nitrogen..
By MdR-2006 1148911246But it feels great. Nice demo and comments. Informative
By HeresAnotherOne 1148580131It is good picture and knowledgeable. I have seen many picture or clip on this website but i like this the most. please put some more pic if available. thanks
By pmsurender 1148233105Now if they could only do this to buildings or people, then it might be useful.
By FotF 1147505005This is very intrsting physics trick. can click some great idea to develope the new things.
I want to contact with this film maker/submitter to know where he get this film clip. because i have a great idea but i need some more information about this.
its just a superconductor.. at room temp the black thing (magnet) is just metal..but when you pour liguid nitrogen on it the magnet becomes a superconductor and can hold up the shiny disc
-simple
...just witnessed the worlds first tractor beam prototype? Anyone done warp drive yet?
By MrAndy 1146672008love the fact people think god is somehow involved or its a trick ha! ya can buy a small block of the superconductor online and the magnets!
By blueroom 1145840204what if you put that in a sealed pressurised container, wouldnt you have a free source of pushing kinetic power, there must be a way to harness those properties to generte electricity, come on people lets think of it, I am sick of all this pollution!
By AK420 1145603546its just science.... if i was a freekin master nerd scientist i could do that!! hounest~~~ no seriously!
By Mimi_Liu 1143996987WOW... Just checked out PrimerMovie.com to see what was new. Someone has actually taken the time to break down the "timeline". FOLLOW THE STEPS!
primermovie.com . look for "ten steps".
Anybody interested in what you have seen here and are even the least bit interested in the prospect of time travel and how SC's can be involved MUST check out the independent film "Primer". This film was shot in documentary mode (not a big fan), yet, I have watched it 5 times (so far).
P.S. Don't bother watching the trailers, untrue to films content, film goes much deeper into science of SC's. If enough of you watch, be prepared for heated debates. There is actually a website devoted to discussion of this film.
Hell yeah, thats awesome. I know theres somthin with magnets man, we need to put more money into researching magnets and magnetic fields.
By SemiStoned 1142398035Great vid! One thing that wasn't mentioned in any of the comments ... SC magnets, like those used in cyclotrons, can be so powerful that they can S**k the iron right out of your blood. So it makes me wonder if one day they will find that commuting on a magnetically suspended and propelled train on a daily basis may cause health problems.
By grizzbr1 1142071801have they discovered the graviton yet, and therefore started looking for an antigraviton?
the theory is that gravity is the only field that doesn't rely on a subatomic particle like an eletron, its also the only one without a complimentary force, so theoretical physicists invent a subatomic particle and then go about proving it exists... like they did with the neutrino.
im only in 8th grade but i know about neutrinos. the things so small that they move through everything with ease. but what i dont understand is how we know these exist if they go through everything
my teacher is a complete dumass and did not know herself, please, i am curious and you are knowledged email me at slate52@ sbcglobal.net
... I tried this once. It was very exciting ! I have done a lot of experiments and such things. This one is the 3rd most exciting experiment i have done. The most exciting was very facinating, I melted iron, with some COLD water ! It was unbelieveable !
By Ramax 1141246953that sounds like it could be useful in practical jokes, teach me ^_^
i gots A level physics knowledge, so i'm sure i'll manage
UFO Technology? The earth is a giant magnet.
By thethinker 1136581248This is reasl that thingin the middle is a magnet then positive and negative dont match like wen you get a mmagnet and put them oposite ways and they move away from each other by themsleves but i dont kbnow at that liquid is it might even be liquid nitrogen?
By Moee 1136520679the thing in the middle is a superconductor block. and the round thing is a magnet and the liquid is probly liquid nitrogen or something colder. note the magent wasn't repeled it was fixed to a position and could pick up the block.
By thatoneguy 1143593698Approaching -200 - very minus, odd Fahrenheit, this will occur. I need some shut-eye. Let's pick this up in the AM, HST. Stephen.
but as to controlled levitation, check out the lifter project at jlnlabs.org Lot's of videos there.
Another great source of info is American Antigravity. And once you have checked the background, you can buy yourself a lifter from Applied Electro gravitics [but remove the space between electro and gravitics].
Did you hear about the MAGLEV train? Its based on the same phenomena, super conductors are perfectly diamagnetic (repel a magnetic field completely) and zero electrical resistance (current ramains running forever is a conductor).
By Teffa 1135645087It would be cool to put if they put the liquid beneath Some type of Car body with no wheels and line metal sheets to roads, And there ya go Hover Crafts that create no Friction and Ozone safe. And Also if ya have a wreck the liquid then can Cryopreservati your body. Then can be cloned and live happily ever After
By Narrowflare 1135638444Not sure of the exact dynamics that cause this but super cooling the one material causes it to exhibit both attraction and repulsion magnetic forces.. which is why the small object would hover wherever he placed it and why he could also pick up the supercooled material with the unmagnetized metal bearing.
By Sycosys 1135629846but at first nothing happened, then when they pored the liquid on it, it reacted whith it, or something, and if it was opposing forces how could he pick up one of the magnets and the other magnet not stay on the table?
By weensieo 1135619062The liquid is liquid nitrogen (very cold). It cools the block of material which makes it super conducting. Super conductors can levitate very strong magnets with the magnets' own fields.
By Peri 1135711417I wonder if somehow you can levatate objects using this method? Hmmm I wonder...
By ezplayer21 1186496207The fact is that these people are hte people who blow up our buildings, our young boys and men, and shoot at our civilians in hotels. As you can hear the british guy filming say "shoot at us will you". These people you see being beat are not "innocient" or in anyway above this. They are the enemys soldiers, they don't wear uniforms and they don't stand out, so any man of 'fightin age' is a soldier and to be treated as such. and if you catch a soldier you punish him, once these people where down and actualy subdued they where left alone, but when they where still kicking and fighting htey where hit with sticks. which do not apear to be more then just pieces of wood.
this is marshall law and you'd expect to see the same thing done in our own countries if this was the situation.
Good work british soldiers, and in no way did htey disgrace anyone. Look at the outcomes of hte mohammad cartoons, these people are in the 3rd world and act like it but expect to be treated like they own the world, first they need to get their heads out of their asses and realise that they don't own the world, and they arn't the be all and end all. Infact they're quiet ininsignificant.
i see a magent adn a supercondutor in the viedo. I don't see anyone fighting. nope no soldiers either. what are you talking about?
By thatoneguy 1143593442
