Some cool physics experiment
This is an excellent demo of super conductivity. The liquid is liquid nitrogen. The disk is a magnet. The black block is the super conducting (SC) material (but becomes SC only below its critical temperature, somewhat higher than liquid nitrogen).
When warm, the block has no particular magnetic / electric properties. When cooled, it becomes a SC. One of the properties of a SC is that magnetic fields can be pinned in place in the SC.
A moving magnetic field generates eddie currents within conductors, and can be felt as a resistance to relative motion. In most materials, this current quickly decays due to electrical resistance. In SC, eddie currents do not decay, but instead will tend to hold the magnetic field in place.
Buy one of those round or spherical supermagnets (they are cheap, but NOT A TOY) online. Get a THICK copper tube. The thicker the wall, the better. Drop the magnet down the tube. Notice 2 things: It takes longer than it "should" for the magnet to fall out the other side. The magnet never touches the side.
You can get a little levitation on just a copper block (haven't tried it yet) and a super magnet. I bought a bunch because they are so useful in the STEEL garage I have, as well as fun. They are nickel PLATED ceramic and brittle. You let 2 big ones slam together and you have instant shrapnel moving at VERY high speeds.
Even with a block of ROOM temperature copper you will notice the effect. As the magnet approaches, it creates micro-currents that act as a opposing (same pole) electromagnet which will make the magnet feel as if it is in quicksand if you try to scoot it around the surface, roll it off by tilting or even settle down slowly if dropped on the copper.
It's the flux trapping effect! ;)

Those bearings as well in the hard drives (if memory serves) used to be magneto-ferrofluid bearings effectively a fluid bearing with magnetic liquid allowing the hard drive to settle accurately while maintaining a hermetic seal to keep moisture and particles out of the hard drive platter area, and as mentioned you dont have bearing wear.
what is the name of the frog video
If you Google "frog floating on magnet" the first or second link will take you to a site that has the frog video and several other objects floating in a magnetic field. You'll have to follow the links, since I can't post a direct link here. There is also information about how it works, if you feel like learning something :P

MAGLEV train comment guy is right; Meisner effect, known for, oh, at least 80 years... However, the coolant appears to be liquid nitrogen, which means the metal is not typical type 4 superconductor (eg. niobium), but probably "high temp" superconductor. That is, relatively modern variation of Meisner effect.

By hakenkruz 1193208373 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removethis effect is called the meissner effect, where the magnet is levitated due to the repusion caused by the eddy currents that are induced in in such a direction in the superconducting material, that they repel the magnetic field of the magnet on top and hence levitate it. the material at the bottom is made to superconduct by adding liquid nitrogen to it.
By TIME-OUT 1188469098 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThat is so awesome. I did that at work in 1988. I also had some liquid helium in one of our experiments, our dewar had a leak and air got in and froze. Looking at frozen air now that is bizarre.

The block in the center of the bowl is a high temperature superconducter such as Yttrium barium copper oxide. (High temperature is considered to be above 77 K, or -196 C, the boiling point of liquid nitrogen) The effect which floats a magnet is called the Meissner effect. This is the occurence of the magnetic field inside a superconductor becoming zero. This will levitate a magnet as long as the magnetic field does not exceed the critical magnetic field. The magnet stays still because the field lines are not perfect due to flaws in the crystaline structure.
By kevinlarson 1151172775 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI forgot to add an interesting application of this effect to my comment. This effect allows a magnet to float with no friction, one could spin a very heavy magnet to very high speeds as a method of storing enormous amounts of energy in the rotational kinetic energy of the magnet.

Anybody interested in what you have seen here and are even the least bit interested in the prospect of time travel and how SC's can be involved MUST check out the independent film "Primer". This film was shot in documentary mode (not a big fan), yet, I have watched it 5 times (so far).
P.S. Don't bother watching the trailers, untrue to films content, film goes much deeper into science of SC's. If enough of you watch, be prepared for heated debates. There is actually a website devoted to discussion of this film.

the theory is that gravity is the only field that doesn't rely on a subatomic particle like an eletron, its also the only one without a complimentary force, so theoretical physicists invent a subatomic particle and then go about proving it exists... like they did with the neutrino.
im only in 8th grade but i know about neutrinos. the things so small that they move through everything with ease. but what i dont understand is how we know these exist if they go through everything

They are the enemys soldiers, they don't wear uniforms and they don't stand out, so any man of 'fightin age' is a soldier and to be treated as such. and if you catch a soldier you punish him, once these people where down and actualy subdued they where left alone, but when they where still kicking and fighting htey where hit with sticks. which do not apear to be more then just pieces of wood.
