PRES. FRANKLIN DELANO ROOSEVELT: “Yesterday, December 7, 1941, a date which will live in infamy.” (Video from KSDK)

Tuesday marks the 69th anniversary of one of the most noted events in American history.

“A day that lives in infamy 69 years after the fact. December 7, 1941, Japanese fighters bombed Hawaii’s Pearl Harbor, killing 2,300 people and effectively drawing the United States into World War II.” (CNN)

The day will be filled with tributes, ceremonies, and events of remembrance. HLN’s Robin Meade took a live look-in at the nation’s capital, which has its own set of memorial plans.

“To mark the day, flags that you see at the Capitol and the White House are at half-staff. At noon, ceremonies will be held at the World War II Memorial.” (HLN)

TIME Magazine took a unique look at Pearl Harbor coverage -- from 1941.

“... news organizations attempted to make sense of it all. Far removed from the future 24/7 news cycle, the correspondents of the era had only bits and pieces of information from the Japanese assault on Hawaii and did their best to put it into a broader context.”

Take a look at this headline from the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette the day after the attack: “Japs’ Desperation Shown by Attack”

(And from the St. Petersburg Times:) “There is no turning back now; the die is cast.”

And back to 2010 - a Fox News reporter stopped by a new Pearl Harbor museum and visitor’s center in Honolulu -- where Pearl Harbor survivors from around the country have come to visit.

“The people here raised more than $50 million to put the center together, and it is quite a site. It really starts from before WWII before through the surrender. Gives you a perspective not only from the US side and from the local living here in Hawaii, but also the Japanese pilots flying the zeros who bombarded Pearl Harbor back on that day.”
