Puget Custom Computers shows off a truly unique computer, built in an aquarium! Cooling is provided by submerging the system in mineral oil. With lights and bubbles, it looks great, and is not as expensive or difficult as you might think.

  • Could I

do this with just water. Maybe salt water. Then I could also get some real fish and have them in the tank. Hopfully they won't end up in the power supply. Also it wouldn't be as messy as changing the oil.

    • water, especially salt water is

conductive to electricity as opposed to mineral oil, which is used among other things as a cooling fluid for high voltage transformers

  • Great idea

I have a friend who is a modding geek, definately gonna show him this one... Where can I see the perfomance tests for this kind of cooling? Cause i see you guys running 3dMark in the vid ;)

    • it works...

we did this at a tech shop i worked at before. it was a rumor, so we got old parts tried it and oh man it stays so much cooler, better than water cooling systems, and safer. 5**** and fave. good demo video.

    • Oh, NVM, found it in your link ;)

      Great job!

      By Mixxxxx 1180452619
  • wow! that is cool

so is it worse of better than standard cooling systems with air? also could you use something to cool the liquid? cos if so i REALLY want one

    By randomvideos 1179074075
  • hmmmm

    wouldnt that be dangerous????

  • Mineral Oil

Does mineral oil go bad over time?

    By Whatough 1197785000
  • WHAT THE?

Awsome dude, 5 and fav, this thing rocks! my old pc almost runs as fast as my new one! and looks better!

    By Mike Davis 1197510517
  • wouldn't this

    slow down the harddrive rpm?
since its a raptor it would have 10000rpm, but how many do you got when its submerged?

    By lucian90 1194633644
    • lol

i thought the same, but if you check it out at the left of the Compaquarium, you see that he has an external HDD

      By Mike Davis 1197510645
    • yeah but,

      then why install the raptor?
i just want to know what the effects on the harddrive will be.

      By lucian90 1197575880
    • Of course

That its speed will be drasticly reduced, you can see at the moment that the power fan is filled up, it slows down a lot, the hardrive would also, it would be really slow tho, not a nice thing to do at all.

      By Mike Davis 1197615393
    • the hard drive should be hermetically

sealed, since the heads are microns above the surface of the spinning disks, any dust particle would cause a dissaster, therefore the disk is hermetically sealed and no oil should be able to get inside

      By UBIQ.TV 1200004001
    • yes but

i was saying that his hard drive is external, stop at 2:20 and u see at the left of the aquaryum the external HD. oh and of course, not advised to submerge Disk Drives, unles u like to hear slow rotation musics... :P

      By Mike Davis 1200208732
    • still,

the powerfan is ment to move air, or in this case mineral oil. so i would think that since it is flat(aerodynamic) it would not slow down as much as you think.

  • Glass fish

Some blown glass fish would be nice!

    By joanieDRUM 1194456763
    • Why not some real fish?

Tropical fish can support up to 20º, as soon as they die we know that the computer is too hot! better have a cat, would be a waste of fish ;)

  • Wow

    Great ...

  • Wrong Link

Hi jonbach, thanks for the nice video. The link that you provide at the end of the video is wrong. The link that you provided ends in /submersion.php whereas the correct link ends in /submerged.php

    Kindly fix the error.

Fake floating fish would be cool too.

    • Link is not incorrect

The link works, and points to the same page. It is intentionally different.

Very cool! Five stars! Fat Boy Slim bonus!

    By phatires 1179076819
  • Cool!

I'd sure love to have one.

  • Water

I guess it works beceause of the oil and that it won't work on water?

    By Ripper25 1178719682
    • Water works

It would work with water, the distilled pure kind that does not conduct electricity (any salt or such would mess it up). Anything that doesnt conduct electricity would work, like cooking oil, motor oil, gasoline etc, all those would be kind of permanent solutions though.

      By h41fGOD 1179069948
    • did he just write...

gasoline.... good luck my friend, even if it dont conduct i wont try that with any electical parts...

      By gilbot3030 1188978998
    • de-ionized

      water will work

      By blahsdfas 1180580279
    • not quite

Even "pure" water wouldn't work, because you can't prevent minerals (even minimal amounts would be a problem) from getting into the water. It has been tried on a German TV show.

      By floele 1179083853
  • lol

forget the fake fish put your hand in there i am sure this is safe lol

    By Photoman67 1207519823
  • I know where he got the idea from!

On youtube, there was a video called vegetable oil pc which was nearly the same, but in the comments people kept suggesting mineral oil.

    By Omfgpie 1194187279
  • kool

any way, it is sooo cool,
i want to try one at home. but i am sure it wont work. :D

    • Fish living in Mineral Oil?

I don't think that would be feasible. Maybe you could though!?! Hahah, Juuuuuust Kiddin'!

      By jdennis218 1179439102
  • let me clarify something...

...if those coolers are supposed to work in air, it will be hard for them to work in oil and i think that at a certain time will colapse...all pieces of hardware with coolers will colapse sooner or later...
I'm thinking of Source of Power, Video Grafic Card, even MB chipset...I dont' want to try this method of cooling with my desktop....

    By Mijareta 1179937320
    • well...

what me and my friends did was cut off the wings from the fan to prevent stress on the motors, cause your system will not work if a fan dies until you replace it. (depends on the mainboard if it protects from overheating and sensors are triggered due to a dead fan)
