Proving that electric vehicles are more than just “cars of the future”, the Chevrolet Volt was named the North American Car of the Year at the 2011 North American International Auto Show (NAIAS), a first for any electric car. The Volt was chosen by a panel of 49 journalists, beating out the Nissan Leaf and the Hyundai Sonata.

In addition to grabbing the industry’s most prestigious award, the Volt has also been named Motor Trend Car of the Year, Automobile Magazine's Car of the Year and the Free Press Car of the Year. Hoping to give the Volt some competition, Ford unveiled the all-electric Focus, while Toyota announced two new Prius models.

From electric cars, to hybrids to hybrid plug-ins, the next generation of cars continues to gain popularity and momentum.
