Brazil's National Confederation of Agriculture has suggested to its members that they can supplement their incomes - and offset carbon emissions - by setting up timber plantations on their land.

The confederation is looking into the benefits of plantations as part of a 40 million real study on how to reconcile environmental protection with income generation.

The confederation's president, Kátia Abreu, said they hoped the study would eventually outline ways in which farmers could diversify their businesses and reduce risks related to the markets.
