You are DEFINATELY the man, Kip! Another great video. 5 stars!
The flashlight hack is sure amazing, but i have one question: If you are going to paint the flashlight, why don't use some kind of bright or shining ink, cause, if u need a flashlight, it's because its dark isnt't it? So, what will u do if you drop it and it turns off...?
Just my 2 cents.
Anyway, most of the flashlights are black, so I think i'm the wrong one in this point...
you drop it it's a crappy plastic light and not a real surefire so it may just break.
By cixelsyd 1179531996 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveIt cost 10 bucks. What do you expect?
By Omfgpie 1195673457 Reply Spam [+2] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removei am really going to try this one
By jeff3230 1179427425 Reply Spam [+4] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveYou can find the same flashlight at Home Depot. For the bulb, I bought a 6 C/D cell Krypton replacement Maglite bulb because the Radio Shack bulb won't work. The Maglite bulb works great, although I had to order it online at flash-lights.com. I also bought my batteries online at batteryjunction.com for $1 each plus shipping. Much better than buying Duracells or Energizers for $4 each. Great Flashlight!
By dk523 1185387788 Reply Spam [+2] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI personally own a E2E surefire too much $ for the light .I tried this Mod which is Kool, but I must be doing something wrong .The bulb keeps popping.I use the 3 -3v baterries which is 9v and in the video I used same bulb which is 6v Krypton .I figured it would pop.Tried anyway.Any Ideas what I am doing wrong?
By rippin lips 1182380697 Reply Spam [+2] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveOk I have Googled everything bI can for a 9v bulb cannot find one .So far I found a 6v flashlight with zeon bulb just like my surefire. It is at Walmart for
$20.00 .That seems to be the way to go unless somebody can find a 9v flashlight bulb.
Cool hack Kipkay but I tried it and that krypton light bulb blew. It is only rated for 6 volts. I'm going to try to find a different bulb that can handle the new power supply. it was fun to try anyway. Thanks.
By niceguybrad 1181882953 Reply Spam [+2] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI had the same problem. As soon as i put in the KPR112 Krypton bulb it blew too. It would be awesome if you could tell me if you find a bulb that works.
Thanks
In my country, policemen already use this kind of method, with the only difference they buy them black and paint them yellow.
off to your hacks! Keep'em coming!
By gandolf169 1179505586 Reply Spam [+2] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThat bulb is 6 volts. And all three batterys combined is 9 volts. your over driving the bulb by 1.5 volts that little guy cant handle it for much longer.
By satish89 1205995434 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveCVS price 8.99, Radio shack price 9.99 EACH. And the bulb only lasted about 1 second on 9 volts of power. Sorry KIPKAY you missed the bus on this one.
By great2be 1204485837 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI just made one and it has blown two bulbs!!!
By GoRocket 1203039708 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removewell, going from two AA cell batties 1.5 volts each in series=3 volts.
you took it to 9 volts.
has anyone ever experienced a wire malfunction or malfunction of any other sort due to increased voltage?
This actually works great--until you need to have the flashlight on for more than 1 or 2 minutes at a go. Then the plastic sleeve/threads holding the bulb begin to melt from the heat and the flashlight no longer works. Save your money and buy a real fiashlight, kids.
By dwazzle 1199738845 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveHaving tried this I've found that the bulb burns so hot it will eventually melt the reflector. If kept on for any length of time.
By rawkdw 1199498186 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThe 272-1163 Krypton Lamp used in this video is rated for 6V. It will have a dramatically reduced operating life at 9V.
Operating this at 6V by using only 2 of the 3V batteries would be more sensible. The brightness would then be comparable to the SureFire, but it would be more reliable.
I first tried this with a 4.8 volt bulb and it burned out in about 15 min. Deffinately use the 7.2 volt from radioshack. The only thing is that the batteries are about 5 bucks a piece at Wal Mart. I found them online for about a buck a piece on ebay.
By ennig 1195527475 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveHow long does the power last
By frankoUSA 1194141378 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThe KPR112's burn out from the battery load so i moved up to krypton 7.2. The 7.2 melted the flashlight!!! Granted the kid i gave it to as a BIRTHDAY present had it on for 15 mins straight. Just a heads up.

the flashlight it self is $20 then the batteries are about $5 each and bulb is another $5... so its actually a $40 flashlight, not $10

By pb1157 1207923941 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThis lamp will not last very long. Visiting Dons Bulbs and Limitron, I learned that operating a lamp rated at 6V for 20 hours design life (the bulb that was used in the video), at 9V (the voltage stated in the video) will reduce its life to .043 (from Lumitrons website) of that 20 hours. Just long enough to shoot the video.
By mmmna 1207258464 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThis is a fraud! Thnxs for making me lose about $30.
An eveready torch light does not cost 4 dollars. It cost like 15. I tried twice. This is the worst video i have ever seen.
How do u think up all these ideas? Well fake ideas for that matter.
Did u use a Maglite for the last light. I bet you u did........ u cheater.
Look try and make it realistic for us people who work hard for money. If you're gonna post these vids, make sure they work.
Thats pretty good - except for the fact that you forgot to include the price of your three lithium 3V batteries...about $5-10 apiece!!! Oh well...
By NemesisTrader 1205909571 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveFlashlight was 1$, batteries were 15$, bulb was $2.50. Ridges were a pain and difficult to get to. Would be easier if you can find a flashlight where the bottom un screws. Once done the final product is AWSOME!! Keep the videos comming.
I'll just bring some gasoline and lighter and build a big ass camp fire when I need a light!

Nottrying to be a jerk or anything like that but the battries just for one cost almost $10 so its actualy abouta $40 hack

By dawgsays90 1200204900 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI've made a bunch of these for friends. The hack is simple and very effective. The light is brilliant, but the reflector in my Surefire focuses a sharper beam, so it carries farther than the hack. The hack actually is brighter, though. Order the batteries from Surefire. You offer a great price by the box and the shelf life is 10 years, so they won't go dead.
By pizzabed 1199931769 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThe Duracell Ultra 123 3V lithium battery retail for almost $6 each, 3 would make it as most $18. Plus the original flash light and Krypton 112...
By shajbot 1199763573 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI just built this new flash light and it really does work. The batteries are a bit more expensive than 4$.....6.95$ each or 10.95$ for a two pack. either way this is a great little light. thanks Kipkay...you da man!
By BuckNekkid 1199298262 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removethats pretty cool, im gonna make one of those because there just awesome, and im waiting on parts for a laser flashlight also...
id like to see some more cool stuff with lasers
so cool
I'll keep the E2e that's lasted me about 5 years now.
Yeah, 9v is brighter than 6v, but basically waterproof, body that won't crack the first time you drop it, properly focused beam, 2 stage switch (actually mine's the older twist/push), won't melt itself if left on, warranty...
If you wanna be cheap, it's easier to get one of the $20 Garmins at wal-mart which is also a hair brighter, I keep one of those in my glove box. Just be sure not to leave that one on too long either lol.
Still, all in all a pretty cool hack. I gave it a 4.

I hooked it to my power supply and ran it to 18 volts (3, 6 volt batts.) By the_Spazinator 1180040990 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI'm not sure if Surefire was a good light to compare it to. It's probably about 1000 times more reliable then what you just made. I don't think you will see to many Police Dept. drilling out plastic handles anytime soon. The bulb your using is a 6 volt bulb.
Using 3-3volt Lit. Batteries I would think the life of the bulb is a little short. I would say it,s probably better then most $10-$12 dollar Fliashlights.
those batteries however look expensive lol
By sliq1 1179641440 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveKeep it up, I am always your fan. Please give us other fantastics hacks, we are always waiting for you. I think you are always good at hacking things, what are you going to do next? Maybe a CD player into a killer laser???
By CrazyScienceLeague 1179632177 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveHow long will the batteries last? the krypton bulb uses plenty energy
By scorpion987 1179628667 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveRight when I saw this, I grabbed $11.00 and took off to Radio Shack, got the exact bulb, total price tax: $1.50. Next, I went out to Home Depot and grabbed the Eveready Contractor, total price tax: $4.39. Finally, I ran to Walgreens to find the Duracell Extra 123 Lithium 3V battery. I finally found them... And my jaw dropped... They were $8.00 for the OFF BRAND! I was so sad... Great idea, wrong pricing, and it killed my day :-( But it doesn't mean I still don't love watching your videos! You're a smart guy, Kip, keep up your awesome videos! :-)
By BigKuhr 1179628066 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThe flashlight and bulb were about what he said but the batteries are the deal-killer. Not only is the flashlight $25 to make, but it'll cost $15 for every battery change! No thanks.
In addition, the bulb he used was 6.5 volts and wouldn't fry quickly with 9 volts of juice.
I'll stick with my reusable, 'inferior' flashlights!
u rule! This video is maxed out bro!
By seobro 1179627944 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI won't comment on another great video,or the negative comments. Just watch mine, cause no one is and I think it is one of the better ones I have seen out here.
By rahcoeloosh57 1179627265 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveYou are an internet legend! :-)
By TheRealEddieB 1179610847 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removefactor in the work and paint and you got yourself a "$20 police flashlight hack"
By omnivore 1179605476 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI thought the same thing, but you can get good deals on batteries in bulk on the Surefire website...
http://www.copquest.com/31-1505.htm
They were $7.99 per for the Walgreens off-brand. But of course, eBay will always have everything cheaper.

By hockeyman944 1179792167 Reply Spam [-1] Moderate Up Moderate Down Removecost more the $10 if you were to buy them at a store. I’ve also used your Surefire and it just has a cool factor with the anodized aluminum that’s strong enough to inflict serious pain on a perpetrator. Either way you’ll always get 5 stars cause this would be a good night caching light, not that you would even do that!!!
