Move over Larry King, Piers Morgan has arrived. The Brit replaced the King after his retirement and has started his show “Pierce Morgan Tonight” with a bang, interviewing the likes of Oprah Winfrey, Ricky Gervais, and Howard Stern. His promise to viewers?

"What I want to see is energy, and dynamism, humor...there’s nothing more boring than boring TV. Who wants to watch that? The one thing I can guarantee people, is that I won’t be boring.” (CNN)

From one interviewer to another, David Letterman offered a piece of advice.

Letterman: “You need to grab somebody by the tie and just pop ‘em, just a short right cross and then it’d be fantastic.”

Morgan: “Would it work if it was Larry or would it been seen a bit too cruel? Joking, only joking.”

The New York Post reports on Morgan’s interview style -- saying he has a reputation for being opinionated and combative. He was fired from his position as editor of the Daily Mirror in Britain for publishing what turned out to be fake photos of Iraqi prisoner abuse. The Post reports his past is the stuff of reality TV legend.

Piers says, his interviewing style includes flirting. He told the Post, “This may be the main difference between me and Larry, actually. The 32-year age gap is proving to be quite beneficial with the ladies.”

But when it comes to TV, it’s all about the ratings. According to Deadline Hollywood -- Morgan is battling Fox News’ Sean Hannity and MSNBC’s Rachel Maddow for the top spot at 9PM.

A kickoff show with the queen of interviews, Oprah Winfrey, put him above CNN’s primetime average, but Hannity and Maddow trumped Morgan when he invited his first non-showbiz guest, former Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice. (Video from: CNN)

Morgan responded to the fall in ratings on Twitter, saying, “Relax re the ratings everyone, still 40% above where they were at 9pm on CNN and got good feeling about Ricky Gervais last night...#goingup.”

BBC News reports it’s too early to tell if the British journalist will be able to keep ratings up on the American programming or rival the show of his first interviewee. In a CNN interview, Morgan said his tactic is just to go with what he knows.

“All I can do is do it my way, you know back in the UK I’ve had a pretty successful run with live stories and had bigger and bigger guests and they’ve been increasingly revealing and emotional in the way they’ve gone about doing interviews. So, I’m hoping that all the practice I’ve had back home I can now bring to this wider market.”

So, what do you think? Does the Brit replace the King well? Or do you miss the suspenders?
