It's estimated that heart disease kills one American every 34 seconds, making cardiovascular disease the number one killer in the United States. One of the best ways to stem the tide, according to physicians, is to diagnose heart problems - and intervene - early on. Now, new advances in molecular imaging technologies are allowing you to do just that. The Biograph 64 from Siemens combines the anatomical info from CT with the functional information from PET technology. PET and/or CT technologies are rarely used in the ER environment, so this application is fairly unique. Using this technology, treating physicians can view incredibly detailed images of the heart and surrounding tissues - enabling them to detect early signs of heart disease that in the past, were only obtainable with invasive procedures. The result: less than an hour after a patient enters the ER with chest pains, physicians can begin to provide personalized treatment, whether it means prescribing medication, or suggesting lifestyle changes that can help reverse heart disease. In hospitals without this technology, patients with chest pain are generally admitted to hospitals for 24 hours of observation -- then often times, released with a clean bill of health - only to return months, even days later, suffering from a full blown heart attack.
