In U.S. News -- Thousands of Wisconsin’s public employees will continue to fight the state’s proposed budget as they enter a third day of protests. And in the middle of this state-wide crisis -- a few Democratic State Senators decided to flee the scene.
(Video: CNN)
The new budget drafted by the Governor will cut the bargaining rights and benefits of teachers and other public employees. Yesterday, Democrats fled the state to delay a vote on the budget and slow the process to a halt. Some of their constituents are wondering “Is their idea of running really democratic?” Wisconsin State Senator Jon Erpenbach answers to CNN.
ERPENBACH: We had a number of amendments and we’re ready to go to the floor this morning and start that process. But it became very clear from the Republican leadership that none of our amendments would be considered or even adopted to the legislation. So we really only had one option. ... Again this bill was introduced last Friday, he wants a bill today. This is microwave legislation at its absolute postive worst.
In world news — protests continue in the Middle East, with no end in sight. In some countries, the demonstrations have grown increasingly violent. BBC reports.
“As the mood of anger spreads, here in Libya, also reports of deaths, during clashes between security forces and protesters. ... There have also been deaths and injuries reported here in Yemen, it’s seen some of the most violent protests in the past week.”
Human Rights Watch says at least 24 people have been killed in Libya alone, while four more was buried in Bahrain on Friday. In Yemen, the death toll is up to four as well. (Video: BBC)
And in business news — U.S. antitrust investigators are looking at Apple’s terms and conditions for publishers hoping to sell digital subscriptions through the App Store.
The Wall Street Journal reports the Justice Department and the Federal Trade Commission are inspecting whether Apple violated antitrust laws by funneling media companies costumers into the payment system of the iTunes Store — then taking a 30 percent cut.
Right now, the inspection is at a preliminary stage, but might lack enough evidence for a formal investigation.
Finally in the tech world -- IBM’s Watson wowed audiences by defeating Jeparody’s best contestants, but now the tech company wants Watson to take over the way we interact with computers on a daily basis.
Dallas News says IBM plans to adapt Watson’s “Natural Language” interface as a consulting reference for physicians, scientists, and other researchers. The goal? Watson could process questions about an illness and send back information to the doctors as if they were talking to someone in the same room.
Watson lead researcher Jennifer Chu-Carrol wants everyone to remember, “IBM is not in the business of building machines to play on game shows.”
