what happens if u stick ur finger in after u touch it? ur finger burns? what happens?

    • LOL

wtf its just a sculpture lol.... does it necessarily have to be known as a dik?

      By Robelstran 1199567935
  • its not ice or plastic

its a super saturated solution, so more sodium acetate than can be normally (at room temperature) dissolved in water is dissolved, so when something touches it all of the extra sodium acetate goes from being dissolved to precipitating and becoming solid...... or the person went to hogwarts..... i went there

    By aorman 1180229713
    • yep

it is super saturated my Chem. Professor did this as a demo once .... pretty cool!

      loved the Binary vid

    • ok..im a noob..

ok i can't seem to get the inbetween parts figured out..how long do you keep the solution in your fridge , how long do you keep it out after its in the fridge and how long do you heat ...???help please..also any info on a good , easy and safe way to make sodium acetate..i have found a bunch of different methodds but none with FULL instructions...

      By effyourmother 1191976540
    • can it be reused

like if u put it in the freezer will it become a liquid?

      By lopez da beaner 1184389431
    • reused...

Actually it should melt back if you warm it up.
Only now dealing with solid and not liquid, be careful how you warm it up (you want it to melt, not to burn)
You should try to remelt it back in the pan with a little bit of water so that you don't go over boiling temp.

I think this enters the cases of metastability. Only this product seems to be fairly stable.
Metastability is much harder to achieve with water but it's much faster and it would probably make a cool video :)

      By xinoef 1185588642
    • I was wondering...

I was wondering while watching this video if anyone would know that it was a supersaturated solution. :)

Though no chemical reactions are taking place, so technically the phrase would be "the process is exothermic." But that's just terminology =]

Wouldn't putting it in the fridge cool it down too fast? Every time I've done it, I've had to wrap it in foil to prevent it from cooling down too fast...

      By SapphireIris 1208408101
    • Hey does anyone know?

what would happen if you put too much sodium acetate into the water and what would happen if the water was boiling?
I asked my science teacher if we could do this and he told me to find this out

      By nero00102 1192241247
    • It does not dissolve.

if u put too much sodium acetate when its boiling, then it would not dissolve. It said it in the video. kinda. =P

      By bam123 1202362648
    • man..is it warm?

i mean if u touch it u gonan burn ?

      By pe4ce 1181405909
    • yes

but it won't burn you. Its the stuff used in those handwarming pads.

      By DJ_Teac 1182210967
    • will it work

if i just use the stuff in the handwarming pads? We have a lot of them cause we bought them in bulk

  • A tiny bit of...

Cesium or Francium in a fragile glass bowl... in a plastic bag with this stuff all around it and you have... a freezing bomb!
W8, I am not the best with chemistry...Cesium and Francium WILL react and explode when mixed with this..right? :P

    By MadVlrus 1180064132
    • idiot

      your not smart are you
      francium is radioactive
dropping that in any water based solution or water will cause a small scale nuclear explosion that could wipe out a neighborhood!

      By QUAKEMASTER 1246600185
    • Incorrect

For starters, its spelled Francium and francium is highly radioactive, so it would kill you to be anywhere near it without proper protection. Secondly francium is an alkali metal, meaning it rapidly decays (explodes) when exposed to water. The largest cluster of francium ever found was 10,000 atoms, not 10. Besides, due to how dangerous and rare francium is, it would be near impossible to obtain it.

    Hi there shootingeggs crew!

I registered at Metacafe just to send you this message,
I was on the internet searching for videoed experiments and found your excellent collection of DIY's, and I must say, I just love them all!

The one I thought that was the most amazing of them all was the one about Instant Hot Ice, I just couldn’t believe it when I saw it.

The reason I sent this message to you is because I just love that song you used with this video,
Is it possible and I would be very grateful if you could tell me what the name of this song is, Please?

    Thanx a lot in Advance!!!

  • that isnt it at all

it is a pure solution so wen you tuch it it creates an imputity causing a ENDOthermic reaction caulsing it to harden
    fire is an exothermic reaction

    laten prefexes:
    exo=out
    endo=in

the reaction is happenin IN the solution

    By omega one 1182480610
    • WRONG

its an exothermic reaction because it gives off heat.
      -thermic=heat
      exo-=out
      endo-=in
      ergo:
endothermic=absorbs heat or takes heat in
exothermic=radiates heat or puts out heat

  • how to revert

On those heating packs, there is an explanation, how to revert it to liquid again. Is it with heating?
What happens with sodium acetate? Why does it crystalize?

    By Rectangular 1181574081
    • yes

take a hammer to it and do the first step again

      By omega one 1182481513
    • Heating is it

Heat it carefully and slowly in the Microwave, just like those bags, its the exact same fluid.

It crystalizes because, in the heated water you can add more sodium acetate then you could on the cooled down water.
So in the cooled water there's too much sodium acetate.
When touching with your finger (or pushing that metalthing inside the heating bag) you provide it a nucleationsite, where it can start crystalizing.

  • ??

why didn't it solidify when u poured it from the glass to the tray?

    By the hard 1180530189
    • Nukleation

The proces of solidifying is startet by nukleation (or nucleation ? what's it called in english?).
It builds crystals on the nucleationsite, and then other crystals form on the ones already existing, the nucleation process keeps on going.
Should also work with a piece of wood or something. But the glass surface is to "clear" to provide a nucleationsite.

      By DJ_Teac 1182211248
    • no

nuclation is the prosses of seporating a solution of fluids via extreamly small hols on a reactant like mentos and soda

      By omega one 1182481074
    • You're wrong, and right

Nucleation doesn't only affect seporating of a solution.
Ask some Physican (or what they're called in english) the reaction is based on nucleation.
