As Memorial Day Weekend approaches and many people open their pools for the summer, the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is warning about the danger of residential pools to young children. The agency is unveiling a television public service announcement to alert parents and caregivers to what the drowning of a young child really sounds like.

CPSC reports there are about 260 drowning deaths of children younger than 5 each year in swimming pools, and, on average, an estimated 2,725 children are treated annually in hospital emergency rooms for pool submersion injuries mostly in residential pools. CPSC strongly advises that parents use layers of protection like fences and door alarms to prevent their children from becoming a drowning victim. For more information, visit www.cpsc.gov.
