A report published last week in the Journal of the American Medical Association, suggests that women who've been on osteoporosis drugs for more than five years have a nearly three times higher risk of unusual fractures than those with only transient exposures to the drugs.
This got me thinking about osteoporosis. All disease, osteoporosis included, is caused from deficiency or toxicity or a combination of the two. The main cause of Osteoporosis is deficiency.
But guess what, even though industry marketing tells us so, it is not caused from a milk deficiency.
It is not caused from a calcium supplement deficiency.
It is not caused by a osteoporosis drug deficiency
There is one main factor which leads to osteoporosis, but before I get to that, here are 2 important things to do to maximize the effectiveness of the your osteoporosis prevention program.
If you want strong bones:
Eat a mineral-rich vegan diet
Eliminate foods shown to contribute to osteoporosis, like sodas, sugar, alcohol, white flour-containing foods and animal products-all these foods are highly acidic and over a lifetime can rob your bones of calcium to buffer the acid.
OK, now to the main factor
Yes, your calcium intake matters. But it isn’t the main factor. In the US we drink more bovine mammary secretions than most of the rest of the world yet our osteoporosis rates are higher. Vitamin D status is important too. But again, it isn’t the main factor. You can have a huge calcium intake and have ideal blood levels of Vitamin D but if you don’t have this one thing it won’t matter.
The most important factor when in comes to osteoporosis is movement.
Exercise.
We have such high rates of osteoporosis because we have such high rates of sedentism. We spend too much time sitting around and not enough time moving around.
Bones remodel based on the stress placed upon them. This is known as Wolfe’s Law. Our bodies are amazingly efficient and if we aren’t using something we get rid of it. Sitting around doesn’t require much in the way of strong bones. As a result of the lack of stress placed on your bones they become week and brittle.
The most important thing you can do to prevent osteoporosis is to stress your bones with vigorous exercise. Move your body! Run, jump, dance, play! Do it every day and keep your bones healthy and strong.
