Tough little car, very safe.
The original report compared the Smart to the most common small car the Ford Fiesta. The report concluded that you'd be dead in the Fiesta or the Smart, as you would in almost any car, but the whole point was that the Smart cars structure remained more intact the the Fiesta, IIRC the Fiesta was almost unrecognisable afterwards, you certainly couldn't open the doors on it.
By doberdoggie 1168124021I'll be a smart driver,
I'll have made a smart move.
No one better get smart with me!
I could even have a smart car crash.. oh the possibilities..
i just had a bad crash with my smart for four
and me and my girlfriend were fine although the engine was gone
i hit a toyota land-cruiser tha was coming from right at an intersection
the guy in the jeep wasn't wearing his seatbelt and broke a few ribs by slamming against his steeringwheel
we have a smart cabrio and it is a fantastic little car- makes you smile every time you drive it!! buy one - you wont be dissapointed.
By goochi 1145830281Only thing wrong with the car is the price.
25K ?
I'd be interested at around 10 grand.
if another car (big car or truck or other vehicle) hits this car on one side, or if it crashes with it in movement, both of them... mercedes did a crash test with a smart crashing it with a mercedes s-series (very very big) at 50 mph (front2front)... and i saw it, the smart can fly around 30 feet, but the passengers were safe, just few hurt but the mercedes passengers were very safe hehehe like to call the police and insurance, def. i would buy one of these, 3 cyls. turbo, very nice car
By twe412 1137701372the engine is in the back ], it falls out if there is an actident.it won't explode. They are now for sale in Canada desile only though "Smart for 4" (five seater) is coming later this year or early 2007. The samrt SUV is coming to the US aswell
By Fred2006 1137635356its rigth the engine is mountet in the back but it was never because it has to jump out in an accident so it dosnt explode... i know that because first af all no car engine has ever exploded after a colition only in hollywood. 2ent af all i work whit these cars and i make them and mercedes after they have crashd. i hope u can read this im not to good at english
By AlJiburi 1138015798I believe that the engine is a transverse front lay out, but it is mounted low close to the ground and tilted forward so that in a frontal collision the engine will slide beneath the car avoiding the foot area in the cabin... I must say that I'm impressed with its structural rigidity, I mean the front pillars are almost intact!! Btw weight plays a very important role! basic physics ... Force = mass X accelleration, so the bigger the weight the larger the impact... Fortunately the smart is on a diet!
By landie 1137846755the engine in this car is mounted in the back , it has two seats and a little "trunk" behind the seats and behind-under this, is the engine. its a 0.7 liters 3 cylindres turbo engine, it has something like 60-80 hp and semi automatic transmition. it's available in coupe, coupe - convertible and roadster, and roadster coupe. you can also buy the forfour (five seats) front engine 4 cyls. and its coming the formore. the steel frame that protects the car is called tridion safe cell. it has electronic traction and stability control. daimler chrysler (mercedes in this case) sells it, so for $14,000 dlls, it's an economic, cheap and safe way to move in the city
By twe412 1137973908I stand corrected, I mixed it up with the mercedes A class. Good remark.
By landie 1138099253we are here for helping people, sorry but my english is too bad!! hehehehe
By twe412 1138144619nice safe car ... to bad it only has 2 seats .... hye wuldnt the passengers legs be dismerbered and cruched by the engine beeing pushed bac ...or did the video show the engimne not compressing passenger legs ...
By ahsocurious 1137535134it looked like the potencial passenger should survive. Thats curious.
By ajax00ajax 1137075824green car company in the Great Seattle area sells them 25K for hard top 27.9 for convet. I lived in Germany when these 1st came out. You can park 2 in the same place that a small sedan i.e. Jetta, Passat, and still pull out.
By eddyline 1136957276the whole point in these cars is that they're only as long as they are wide, therefore you can drive headfirst into any space and then drive out again without having to reverse at all or parallel park. Of course in lots of america you can do that with a 15ft long car because people park 2 cars in a space the size that a european would park 4 or 5, but we don't have the luxury of so much free space in europe.
By KX36 1137629771IMO the weight of the car is also played a big role in this test. It does not look very havy, so , there is no much of mass to stop...
not an expert though, just my thoughts.
P.S. love this kind of tests :D
they said it moved the 20ton (or tonne) concrete barrier so if is is very light, it must have bewn going very fast. why should it matter how heavy it is, if its a crash test to see how safe it is in a high speed head on crash, the point is how wel it survives, not that it would have been different if it weighed ore or less.
