She’s not Justin Bieber – and she doesn’t have a record deal. But she IS the latest YouTube sensation.

10-year-old Maria Aragon got Lady Gaga’s attention and went viral with her cover of “Born This Way.” She posted the video about two weeks ago – and it already has more than 17 million views. Here’s a little clip.

News of the video spread fast. Soon Maria was answering calls from Lady Gaga – Ellen DeGeneres and Good Morning America. Gaga said she heard the song during a ‘bad day’ and it turned everything around. Here is what Gaga told Aragon courtesy of the Winnipeg Free Press.

Lady Gaga: “When Perez sent me the video of ‘Born this Way’ I was so overjoyed that I began to cry. I was so happy.”
Reporter: “Now Lady Gaga we are flying Maria into Toronto to see your show in March.”
Lady Gaga: “Well maybe you are just going to have to come on stage with me and sing that song. What do you think?”
Aragon: “That would be really cool.”
Lady Gaga: “Would that be good? Yea, I think so. We should do a duet ,Maria.”

So after that radio interview Maria went on Good Morning America – where she performed and was even offered a generous gift. But it’s not like she really needs it. Apparently she learned the song in just a few days.

Host: “You learned to play ‘Born this Way’ completely by ear in just six days?
Aragon: “Umm, actually I saw some people play it on piano and I arranged it after myself.
Host: “Yourself. So you did it all by yourself.”
Host: “But you’ve never actually had piano lessons. So we at GMA wanted to give you six months of piano lessons for coming on.”

But what was it about Aragon’s performance that got Gaga’s attention? Enquirer.net says it was the song’s simplicity and authenticity.

“It was simple—and yet different. While the hit song’s original studio version is a full-on dance track, Aragon’s cover is a ballad, the better to underscore the lyrics about empowerment...”

FInally The Manila Bulletin asks - what about her plans for school?

“In spite of her spanking success, Maria’s parents admitted that their daughter, a Grade 5 student at the Isaac Brock School in Winnipeg, still misses school. … While Maria’s parents are supportive of their daughter’s music aspirations, they want her to continue her studies.”
