In some dogs (and humans!) the cells in the bone that makes up the ‘ball’ part of the hip are found to have died due to lack of blood supply. This avuscular necrosis (necrosis due to a lack of blood supply) will weaken the bone to the extent that the shape of the hip joint changes, making normal movement for the dog difficult and painful. If left untreated Legg-Perthes disease can be a cause of severe dog arthritis.
