the water density is the highest at around 4 deg C.. colder (and warmer) water will go up. and the water at 4deg will go to the bottom.. so the fish have it nice and warm down there.. :)

Fish can exist in freezing water just fine. Mammals are the ones that have issues with temperature ranges.

Freezing water... is ICE! u mean cold, but not freezing. dont think fish could survive being in ice.
DuckMan had it spot on. fresh water is at its most dense at 4 deg C. ice isn't 4degC, therfore anything colder or hotter than 4 degC will float above it, add convection currents into the mix and you wind up with so long as there's some fresh water, the water at the bottom of any pool will be 4 degrees C, which is liquid and a teperature at which these fish can survive.

Its all to do with hydrogen bonding, isn't biochem wonderful.

how the hell do they get food in there?!

they can stay months without eating,waiting for the water to get warmer.
anyway?their body's temperature's too low to be able to assimilate it.

This is a known phenomenon in nature and it is a concept taught in Physics. Freezing starts from the top in water and progresses downward because of what is known as "anomalous expansion". As a liquid cools, the coldest molecules sink to the bottom in preparation to freeze. But in water, just before its freezing point at 4 degrees, the molecules start to expand, become less dense and rise to the surface where they remain until they freeze at zero degrees. The purer water is, the truer this is.
