  • Serious fighter??

You betcha. Martial arts fighters/actors like Bruce Lee and Chuck Norris fought in tournaments AND then acted in movies. Watch footage of his tournaments before you respond. Bruce never lost any match of any type. UFC?? It would be a great test, just keep in mind that anything within Bruce's reach came out broken, damaged or severely injured.
Bull rushing, like most grapplers attempt, would end painfully short of thier target. Ground games would be disastrous with his short range punches as seen here, not to mention a heel kick from underneath would probaby knock out most opponents. Oh, and for those of you who are thinking about submission specialist, you have to set those moves up first. While being patient to set a submission move can they take the punishment?
But the real answer? Since he is dead we will never know. But, as always, there is someone bigger, better or faster just waiting to take your place on top.

  • So many comments

I have read alot of these comments and as always there is that debate about grapplers being superior to striking fighters and vice versa. Please note that any form of tournament of fighters is indeed sport. Human combat did not develop as a need for "sport", but as a need for self preservation, and now I will make my point. If you can't fight on the ground and you find yourself on the ground in a one on one fight with someone who is a ground fighter you will lose. That is sport. Case closed. Life isn't like that. If you are attacked, the person will be either be bigger than you, or there will be more persons than you. It is not advantageous to grapple one attacker on the ground while his two associates are also fighting his fight, kicking you in the back, head and ribs. You would be better served staying on your feet and moving. Finger strikes to eyes and groin attack, hard punches(etc). Good strikers are better served in this scenario. However the striker may be wrestled to the ground and then has no more advantage than a good grappler in this situation. Strikers have a disadvantage as they are very limited in subduing techniques. Not everyone who needs to be fought needs to be hit. A single aggresive threat ( isolated public nuisance) is best suited to a grappler as the threat has no accomplices and will easily be subdued by a skillful grappler until the police, or security arrive. A striker would have difficulty as he would have to seriously injure the threat with strikes in order to subdue it, and causing this physical damage could possibly lead to legal problems.
All forms of fighting have their niche, just like clothing. You dont wear a bikini to a funeral or swim in a fine suit. Fighting for your life is not "sport".

  • more of fact then fiction...

National Geographic explains all the "science" behind each discipline's technique. bruce did'nt have a title because as he put it " he doesnt believe in styles" where as most contests are title as such like karate championship, taekwondo championship, etc...our school has adopted some of his techniques like the one inch punch.and as fact, a well built artist can put in in effect. I should know, i pulled it once while being mugged in an alley.

  • UFC Talk is freaking silly!

First of all Brice Lee's style was to end the fight as fast as he could and that would mean taking out your vitals. So would he be good in the UFC? Who knows but i can tell you that the Gracies (Not Sure on the spelling) DOMINATED the mixed fighting for years with Ju Jitsu and they were smaller then Bruce and far less powerfull and quick.

There is no way to tell but i cant imagine any of the guys in the UFC would even get a hand on Bruce Lee before he would have FUCKED THEM UP!

Dont kid your self, He was a REAL fighter. He was not a Jackie Chan. Actor then Movie Star.

    • What Bruce trained for was Lethal

To say Fedor is a "killer" when he fights in a padded ring with refs and gloves, it is a bit silly. He is a athlete, not a killer. Bruce trained in the true fighting arts, which are injurious and lethal. He had blinding eye jab, crotch strikes, and kneecap busting kicks to his arsenal, not to mention killer kicks.

everything in those movies was real, except when he went crazy and kicked the poop out of a guy; plus, jeet kune do is not a style, its an art. thats why its a martial ART! besides, karate is filled with board breaking, and bruce lee once said, BOARDS DON'T HIT BACK. jeet kune do is an art of defense!

  • I was there and really saw Bruce Lee in ...

I had the great good fortune to attend the 1964 Ed Parker World Karate Championships, in Long Beach, CA., at the age of 15. I watched all the "Greats" and saw Bruce Lee do a couple of demos.....no body knew of him then........but he did knock a couple of guys out (or down) with lightning quick, explosive punches! He seemed very dangerous to me, and was scary in how fast he demolished all his competition in the fighting rounds! He, at that early time, was very accomplished in his abilities, and became more well developed during his later years...that we can see from his movies!

what ufc / pfc fighters lack..is a brain. people boast about ufc / pfc fighters but when they are dead, how long will they be remembered? bruce left a legacy and is still remembered years and years after his death. truthfully his movies were whatever, but i respect the man for his motivation and strong belief in martial arts. you can't label him as just a martial artist or movie star because he was much more. read his books or watch his interviews to actually understand.

    • I agree with Kagentx

His movies were master pieces of his time. Nothing was faster than him, and i bet you they had to develope better cameras to catch his moves. Don't compare old movies to today's movies like the Matrix, of course the computer films would win.

  • The technique

of the one inch punch is using your waist to give the impact of the punch instead of the arms. It takes very long to achieve the strength and technique to give such a hard impact. my friend did it to me once on my chest and it hurt through to the back. so imagine him punching with his arms and waist. and thats why people are good fighters. Unlike some idiots who claim they know how to fight but all their punches are from high to low like hammering.

Reading all these comments make me realise that some of you only want to seek the negative things and forget the possitive ones.
It's not important who wins or loses.
Bruce lee is famous because the things he said had deep meaning. Like this movie, saying that martial art is not one style and that his style represents the person he is. Be open for other opinions and learn more from it otherwise you are just limiting yourself from advancing forward as a human being.
Never be able to understand other mans opinion.

  • I asked his teacher about Bruce

(Wong Shun Leung) and he said that in his class there were a few people Bruce didn't want to fight / spar with because they would beat the S**t out of him. The silent type, entering the class, 100 % focussed, absorbing everything. This, matched with talent is the best combination you can think of when studying martial art, in particular a very logical and scientific one as Wing Chun, which was the base of Bruce' art and on which he also based his Jeet Kune Do.

The one inch punch is typical Wing Chun and the main punch of the system. (The first part of this video btw you can see him practicing a typical WC move; one hand controlling two).

Anyway: about dedication; Bruce also had this, but he was also extremely impatient and this was blocking him. He never mastered a 'style' completely but was always on the lookout for something new and exiting to learn. Wong Chun Leung was his main Wing Chun teacher in the 50's and passed away in 1996.

About UFC matches etc : some people simply don't feel anything no matter how hard you hit them. If they are also very large and strong and if they master a martial art they are almost impossible to beat. In case you want to try this; try fighting a big thug who's high on coke or PCP (he won't feel a thing)- unless you break his knees or his windpipe (which is very hard to start with)you are in a lot of trouble...

    • sorry 4 the 2 sense

I don't know about this 1, Bruce's main teachers were Master Yip man, William Chueng, and Master Tam who taught him Choy Li Fut. Mastering one particular style doesn't make u a better fighter becuz in the end all these styles seem 2 do is restrict u anyway. A Martial Artist must master himself and learn what works and doesn't work 4 him.

By uncrowned king 1162289835 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • you are mistaken

Yip Man didn't teach Bruce personally. He disliked Bruce even because he was too much werstern oriented to his taste, he being a very traditional and conservative Chinese. The picture on which you see Yip practising Chi Sao with Bruce is from a later time, when Bruce was already sort of a celebrity, and the picture was just staged.
After the early 50's Yip left 90% of his teaching to be done by his assistents, the most proficient of which was Wong Cheung Leung. Check Google if you don't trust me. Bruce even used his master as an extra in one of his movies - he plays himself there [can't remember the title now].
William Cheung never taught Bruce, he was a fellow student and they went out together to battle with other schools and on the streets. Cheung of course states that he was teaching Bruce because it gives him more 'profile' [commercially speaking].

By maxDope 1163954496 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down
    • not too sure about that :o/

that's not entirely true, Bruce Lee was instructed by Sifu Yip man. He traded Cha Cha lesson 4 martial arts lessons. Look it up in the Bruce Lee the untold story. Yip Man disowned him because of the comments he made about classical Gung Fu. And disregarding the old ways and God knows what else but he was his instructor too. And that couldn't have been when Bruce became a celebrity because he was acting since he was a small child. William Cheung introduced the 2 in 1954 after Bruce got his ass kicked by a fat kid. And it is said that Cheung was an instructor of his at times.

i didn't compare Bruce to a 150 kilo Pride fighter, I said there IS NO comparison, someone else was doing it, and said Bruce'd win.
By the way, there are open weight competitions all the time and a big guy has NEVER won it, Check out clips with Antonio "minotoro", Sakuraba, Gracie etc. They beat much bigger guys all the time.
Bruce's problem with UFC and Pride champions would NOT be weight, but time. Time waits for no man, and modern fighters, who learned from Bruce will easily beat him, it's only normal, and it would not mean a thing, he is still great.
(like Matt Hughes said to Gracie after destroying him in a few seconds "It's an honor")

    • Bruce Lee was the best

number 1 these idiots who say different about him don't know what they're talking about. Bruce was a fighter 1st Martial artist 2nd and actor 3rd. How do u think he found his students most of which were seasoned black belt champions and instructors. Jesse Glover Judo champion, Joe Lewis national karate champion, chuck Norris Karate champion and Danny Inosanto 1 of the best Martial Artists of all time was former student and instructor of Ed Parker's American Kenpo school. Bruce's fastest punch was timed with an electric timer and it was five one hundreds of a second and his slowest was eight one hundreds of a second from a relaxed position with his hands at his side. The man was able to do 1 arm 2 finger push ups with 250lbs on his back, and the recipients of his side kicks said it felt like getting hit with a car. He trained 6 days a week which is what contributed 2 his death. Herb Jackson said that he had 2 build a mechanical dummy 4 him practice on because his strength and Fighting Skill had evoled 2 the point where he had 2 fight machines. These people talk about the man like they're information is accurate; u don't know anything about him and probably even less about fighting. Compared 2 real martial atrist who has mastered both the External and Internal components would wipe the floor with Ortiz, Shamrock, Gracie, or Liddell. Even Jim Kelly who was champion and fought some of the best Martial Artists of his time said that Bruce was the greatest who Ever Lived. And 4 the record Bruce only made 5 Martial Art movies and died b4 finishing #5 Game of Death. Ed Parker saw him and Parker was a bad man and said when Bruce was still in his twenties that he was the greatest fighter he ever saw. Mind u this was b4 Bruce had evolved in2 what remember. Just about everyone he trained he fought b4 training them and beat them, and these were CHAMPIONS. Chuch even said Bruce was 1 of the strongest men on the planet holding a 120lbs bar bell in front of him arms extended and elbows locked 4 seconds at a time, try it I bet u can't do it. Most 200lb men can't. This man created a complete and practical system in a matter of 7 years maximum. Jeet Kune Do is was said 2 be the most effective and practical system in Black Belt mgazine. It took the ancients with help of each other hundreds of years 2 create a system and then it wasn't even complete or practical. He fought on roof tops and accepted and challenge in front of him NO RULES and won them. If u don't believe me check it 4 yourself. Tito Ortiz OMG hahahaha or Hughes what r u stupid? Go read up on him or something. People beat much bigger opponents all the time Mike Tyson used 2 knock them alll out regardless of what weight class they fell in2 and some of the guys he fought should have been super heavy weights out wheighing by 20 and even 30lbs. So next time Know what you're talking about.
