Becky Kuhn, M.D. explains how individuals and communities can reduce their risk of contracting waterborne illnesses. Over two million people die of preventable waterborne illnesses each year. These diseases commonly cause diarrhea. Infants, children, the elderly, and individuals with weakened immune systems (such as those with HIV or AIDS) are especially vulnerable. The diseases most commonly spread when people drink impure water. To reduce your risk, drink only clean water, wash your hands correctly, wash fruits and vegetables in clean water, and don't swallow water when swimming.
