The thin layer of aluminum in a CD-ROM makes for some interesting means of destruction. Here, high-voltage AC (up to about 15,000 Volts RMS, 450 VA) is applied at the top (label side) surface of the disk, resulting in immediate dielectric breakdown of the lacquer coating and gradual destruction of the aluminum layer and underlying plastic as electrical arcs burn carbon tracks across the disk, which eventually meet midway, and finally result in a single thin glowing track of liquefied plastic across the disk, continuously heated by the electrical current until power is removed produced by gurpreet12.
