Incredible... It is an angle of 45 degrees!
The wire is not pulling it up. That is a safety wire so that the car does not slide backwards and fall off, killing the driver. if that cable were pulling it up it would have been tight and not so loose.
By blckyoda 1138512301 Reply Spam [+6] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemovewhAT is up there? a neverland beer bar?
The cable is just for safety. The reason it can climb that slope is because
1. They fitted studded snow tires, and
2. Audi have developed a system in their 4 wheel drive cars where the engine's power is transferred to the wheel with the most traction.
lets see any other car do that. Ha. And I understood the whole thing.

By D-titilator 1158036784 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveThe cable is fixed to both ends of the ramp and attaches to the underside of the vehicle via a fixture that allows the cable to slide through it. The fixture has a safety latch that prevents the car from going backwards unless it is manually released. This keeps the vehicle on the ramp and allows the driver to ease the car back to the starting position.

By socrfan 1138586711 Reply Spam [+1] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveI work for Audi so I can tell you the reason for this. This is the new Audi A6 Quattro. 2005 was the 25th anniversary of the Audi Quattro all-wheel-drive system. In 1986 the Audi 100 climbed this same ski jump, in Kaipola, Finland. It's a 37.5 degree slope, or 80% gradient. This commercial is a remake of that famous moment. The car drove up under its own power, 3 safety systems are in place, a front mounted braking system, a steel cable, and a safety net under the jump. However, the car did not have assistance climbing the jump. Besides the tires, the Quattro system did all the work. It was made to capture the Audi brands emotion, power, and technology.
By wirehead 1138591944 Reply Spam [+3] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveA 80% climb is nowhere near 37.5 degrees, it's more like 53.12 degrees.
80% means that on a distance of 100 m you have a elevation of 80 m. Indeed, the slope in the clip is 37.5... What are you doing at audi btw? :))
if you dont know maths than dont go saying things you cant understand..80% gradient means than on a distance of 100 m you go up 80..converted in degres it would be about 36 degrees...
simple math :
if 100% is a 45degrees slope can you tell me htf can 80% be 53.12???
The figures I used come directly from Audi, probably one of the engineers did it, so I trust it's correct :) ... As for me, my job is a little less glamourous than driving an A6 up a ski jump, I fix them. By the way, the car was driven up the jump 11 times just to make sure it wasn't some fluke that it made it up...

By Poker Ex Machina 1147356909 Reply Spam [+0] Moderate Up Moderate Down RemoveDo you know what tyres the used?
They changed the tires from the original studded tyres, which look pretty ordinary, for ones with a narrow tread and studs all over the tread. What tires are they? I use have just changed my studded tyres for the summer tyres, and they are pretty worn out so next October will have to buy new ones. These fitted to the Audi look amazing. If I knew what they were, I would try out a pair.
They are special racing tires made for rallying and racing purposes only. They are not allowed to use outside races, because the studs would destroy the asphalt. And believe, i know, they are very uncomfortable at paved roads because the car wobbles to all directions on top of the long spikes. However, grip is far better on ice and snow than gravel tires give at summer rallies.

A cable that is used for pulling can never go through the car to its back side. It will have to terminate at the car for it to be able to pull it.

For 4 years now, and everytime it snowy and slippy, a Audi can easily drive where other BMW and Mercedes stay on the ground.
This is a really true video.
Yes, the Audi really goes up the hill. Not with the fisrt try no, but eventually with a little help from special studded tires and a cable, which is kept tight enough to keep the car away from the sides.
But the cable is not pulling the car up, it's connected to the tower up and down the hill and the car has a mechanism to "grab" the cable to prevent it from sliding down.
You Can Clearly See a Cord Pulling it

It is the sin(55)= 0.8. If the ramp is 100m long it will go up by 100*sin(55)=80. The tangent has nothing to do with it in this case. Basic trigonometry.
